Any current game that uses jetpacks and is as popular as Tribes 2?

By the way...

Anyone know what is going on with Sierra shutting down the Tribes
servers?

http://www.tribesnext.com/info

That place has come out with their own servers and a patch for the
original game?

Any experiences with the new system?

Thanks.

Seems a bit strange to me that Sierra would shut down the servers
considering the fact that Tribes 2 was still selling for $20 (US) as
recently as two years ago. But anyway... whatever.

"Section 8" is a multiplayer FPS game that makes good use of
jetpacks.

There's never a shortage of populated servers as the game is still
quite new. I really enjoy the frantic pace of the game and the tasty
looking graphics. You do need a beefy system to run it though.

There is a single player campaign with it too that trains you for the
online portion. It's a shame that TimeGate couldn't make a "proper"
single player game with a storyline similar to the way that Tribes 3
was put together.

The online portion is worth the money though.

You also might want to check out Shattered Horizon. Its an MP only
FPS game that is fought is a zero-G environment. Not quite the same
implementation as jetpacks in Tribes, but a unique experience where
your orientation will be challenged with threats coming from all
angles. Also interesting is that the game is from Futuremark the
makers of the 3Dmark benchmark. I think its only like $20 on Steam.
Its a fairly new game, so the servers are generally well populated.

Video preview of this looked quite good I thought. Be interested to hear how
the gameplay really is.

What I really really enjoy about Tribes 2 is being unable to join
a pickup game and move around unharassed, looking for a
strategy/way to pick off enemy units. For example... Planting
mines around the flag (maybe only on a certain map). Hanging
around a shaft, waiting for one of the enemy to dart into the room
and jump into the shaft (going after the flag), and then lobbing a
high explosive down the shaft. Etc.

Just being able to join a first-person world where you can jetpack
yourself around and find combat when ready... Awesome IMO.

Tribes 2 allowed both types of play, frantic and methodical.

Do you use player-to-player communications?

No surprise.

I suppose you are talking about the price of the game, not a
server subscription fee.

I haven't spent a lot of time with it because I've been busy with
other games. Its a DX10 only game and the graphics are spectacular
even without everything cranked up all the way it still looks great.
Probably the second best looking game i've seen since Crysis.

Gameplay reminds me of the Descent series. You can move freely in 3D,
but unlike the mazes of Descent the maps are space stations surrounded
by asteroids. So you can dodge in and out of asteroids while firing
rounds at an enemy. You can also "land" on surfaces to get a better
aim, but this makes you a better target too. The game is MP (w/no
bots) only with the usual game modes of Team Deathmatch, Assault,
etc. You can generally find servers in AUS, EU, and US with a good
number of players (8 - 20) and good pings (50 - 150 ms), but it still
a fairly new game. Aside from the moving in 3D aspect, its standard
FPS fare, strafe, point, shoot, kill. Just with SH you can strafe in
three dimensions. A decent game for $20, probably more appropriately
should cost $15. There's only a few maps, no specializations or
classes, limited weapons (I think just the assault rifle with three
rockets types, that kinda act like grenades (EMP, Ice, and another
one). But if you enjoy shooting people while floating in and out
between asteroids, its a new unique take on FPS and of course there's
talk of more content coming.

At first glance, without adjusting settings, using the test demo...
29 average FPS
6 minimum FPS
107 maximum FPS

Tx dude. Shame there are no bots. Would also make an awesome SP game
environment if they could build it that way from the ground up.

I couldn't agree more. I miss my space sims. It would be great if someone
took away the ships, gave me some cool weaponry, and added a compelling
story. That would be something really new.
