I was looking around the forum through the games people talked about
in the past half a year, and I could not find anything which I would
consider worthy to acquire and play.

I like FPS, and I usually game TF2. The games which I played this year
and which made me remember about them are Dead Space and Mirror's
Edge.

Here is what games I like:

-- first person shooters (as opposed to thrid person shooters);
-- linear plot (as opposed to 'sandbox' -- these are boring);
-- sci-fi and medieval settings (as opposed to modern warfare and WW2
games);
-- high artistic value (images, play, sound -- e.g. play in Bioshock
or sound in Dead Space).

I guess the only game fitting the bill this season is L4D2. But I have
not got it yet because I do not think the incremental improvement from
L4D warrants the status of separate game and an associated price
sticker. Besides, I have never been too fond with L4D to begin with.

People mentioned Borderlands, CoD MW2, Prototype, Dragon of Age:
Orgins... but these are not the games I am interested to play.

So, can people recommend me the games I could get now, or I should be
looking forward to in the next, say, 3 months ?

I like playing linear plotlines imposed on 'sandbox' gameworlds. In
that case plotline and all the elements of storytelling come into
play, so a highly developed AI is required.

That said, when a Q4 comes along I push everything else to the side.

Everyone I've shown Bioshock to sees the high artistic value of the
gameworld. To my mind and w.r.t. graphics, what makes Bioshock
exceptional has somewhat the character as what makes American McGee's
Alice stand out - but somehow better. The texturing and designing
wasn't done with digicam first.

It is a shame you limit yourself to first person, a lot of the more
interesting games these days are 3rd person. You are missing out on
Batman:Arkham Asylum and the forthcoming Just Cause 2 which I can't
wait for after seeing the various gameplay videos.

It is not first person, but "Batman: Arkam Asylum" is a great game and fits
your other requirements. I loved it.

I feel the same way about L4D2. I wasn't going to buy it, but got it
for $30 and it is more of the same. Mowing down hordes and hordes of
zombies that do nothing but run right at you, just isn't that fun, I
don't care how many different weapon options are available. I've
actually found Killing Floor to be more enjoyable since there are a
greater variety of monsters with various attacks.

Sounds like Borderlands would be right up your alley. Don't let the
FPS/RPG hybrid description fool you. Its 90% FPS and very little
RPG.
- FPS
- Linear plot
- Sci Fi setting
- High artistic value (if you like cell shaded graphics)

Personally I got bored with it. I got a Soldier up to like level 28
and haven't touched it since. I had fun in the beginning, but it just
seemed like I was fighting the same enemies, over and over. Shame
there's no demo for it.

On the horizon you'll want to keep an eye out for Alien vs. Predator,
Metro 2033, and Global Agenda (although I think its a TPS and looks
like a mix of Planetside, TF2, and Tribes).

I would recommend Borderlands and also the fan made mod utility that
amongst other things gets rid of the dreadful "line drawing" rendering
effect. Without it the game looks so much better.

Quite why Gearbox decided to go with that look defies logic. Their
fears about Borderlands "looking like every other game out there" are
totally unfounded. Even without that unpleasant addition it still
looks no other game I've ever played.

It has an artistic design that sets it apart from any other game. I
wish they hadn't gone for the Unreal Engine 3 though. I really miss
the antialiasing. The "jaggies" in Borderlands are very noticeable,
even at high resolutions which is a shame.

I agree Andrew. Batman is something else. I did not like the 3rd
person view or the "Prince of Persia" console feel to it but it has to
on most peoples GOTY list.

They're there (at least for some people) and noticeable if your
character stands still and turns slowly on the spot.

Nicely written piece.
After reading that review I put Borderlands at the top of my queue.

OK, guys, my interest was aroused, I did reading on Batman and gave a

Thanks to others for suggestions. I am currently playing Wolfenstein.
I am already through half of the game. At no moment I thought that the
game was tedious which would make me stop playing. Actually, this is
an achievement. Very few games could achieve that. I cannot recall any
of such games... not even HL2 which I liked a lot. Obviously, the
developers have what it takes. Although, I must agree, on the whole
the game is a forgettable experience. Just like another game, FEAR2,
which I played few months ago. I enjoyed it, but the gameplay was not
memorable. Oh, and the graphics in Wolfenstein was obsolete -- maybe
by 5 years.

Thanks to EMan for tip on Metro 2033. It looks interesting (although
it reminds Stalker by visual style... and Cryostasis. It looks like
the Russian game studios share the same developers around :-D ). But
I would wait for another half a year after the release of the game,
when they produce all of the patches. For instance, I got Stalker when
they released the patch 1.6. And I have not finished the game yet :-

Also FarCry 2 if no one mentioned it and Crysis 2 when it comes out next
year.
- Necrovision is kinda WWI, but with a mostly occult/supernatural feel &
setting (ala Wolfenstein), so you may or may not like it.

How did you go with Cryostatis? I think I have up because I hit a bug where
I couldn't progress in one of the rooms in the ship (where you have to jump
up & past the overhanging light...or did I get past that & get bored
later...hmmm).

- Call of Cthulhu had a shooter a couple years back that wasn't total pants.
- Chrome 2 in Feb (I liked the first one back in 2005, though some didn't)
- Delta Force: Black Hawk Down (not bad for an older title)
- Played Halo1/2? I believe you can zoom right into fpv, but it's very
consoley & really designed for a wider angle ots view, bleh
- Prey
- Hellgate London (play a Marksman ;)
- Jedi Outcast, just use weapons & ignore your lightsabre <G>
- Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (still one of the best military sims
/ fps games ever)
- Max Payne 1/2 (can't remember if they had fpv...?)
- No One Lives Forever 1/2
- Sniper Elite (yeah, yeah, I know it's shit, but snipe-cam never got old!
:)
- Tribes (oldie but a goodie :)
- Undying - *great* older horror shooter & perhaps THE most atmospheric
'shivers down your spine' fps, more so than FEAR I reckon
- I 2nd/3rd Borderlands as per other ppl here

- Stalker you've played, someone else mentioned Painkiller, FEAR, etc
- MOH:AA, COD1-4/MW, Quake1-4, Unreal1-N...presume you've played all these?

That's it, I'm out, unless you start talking more rpg-ish hybrids like VTMB,
Two Worlds, The Witcher, etc, or console crap like Gears of War (which is
OTS). Then there are squad-based tactical shooters, which require a lot more
patience & planning, which you may on may not like (Ghost Recon, Rainbow
series etc).

Dark Messiah has been one of my favourite games. At some stage, I
thought that Oblivion with the combat mechanics like that in Dark
Messiah would be an irresistable package.

To me, Borderlands is one more game set in apocalyptic world. I have
seen destruction in my life before, so that I am not eager to see
more, on the gaming computer screen. Fallout 3 was enough for me.
Moreover, it looks like there is no story to Borderlands -- the player
just have to walk around, shoot the same targets over and over, and
collect loot for no apparent reason. B-o-o-o-ring. But I may pick up a
copy of Borderlands several months later when it hits the discount bin
and if I have nothing else to play.

I said: "I like sci-fi and medieval fantasy, and dislike WW2 and
modern combat". Which strikes 2/3 off your list :-) .

Out of your list, I have not played NOLF 1/2, which seems to be great
game. However, after watching many gameplay trailers, I decided that I
could not stand the outdated graphics, so that I had decided against
getting it.

Not sure how well it scales or what graphics it has support for, bit the
first one certainly was a fun romp. WW2 & modern war shooters aside (which
is less than 1/2 the list for the record! ;-p), have you tried and/or
dismissed all the rest? There are some gems there & you don't just have to
take my word for it dude ;). How important is graphics to you, or is
gameplay the top thing in your books?

I have gone through over half of Wolfenstein 2009. Indeed, it is the
first game in years of gaming (since I was a teenager) which made me
forget about time. I just started playing the game, and then, in two
hours, I realised I had to go to bad as I had to get up early for work
in the morning !

People blame the game that it has a small city centre to walk around
and to interact with NPC getting quests. But this is a stupid RPG
crowd ! This design is very suitable for the game and is novel for the
gaming world ! You go for a quest, and after finishing it, you enter
the city centre, and have to cross it to report to someone on the
other side. And you unexpectedly get attacked by enemies. This varies
the gameplay !

And as I said above, I never felt bored, and always had fun !
Wolfenstein could be the third game I played this year which I will
remember (after Dead Space and Mirror's Edge). It had the beginnings
for greatness, and could become GOTY, but it has not made it. For
once, the graphics stayed in 2004. Too old for my liking ! Secondly,
the game play appeases to the console crowd. Hardly a receipy for
GOTY.

I finished Wolfenstein. A well-done game. It shows that the team has a
heredietary of the establishers of the FPS genre.

The game is easy to play in half-an-hour chunks, if that's what you
want after a hard day at work. Bur for me, frankly, as I said above,
the game was so absorptive that I played for an hour or two, and only
then realised the passage of the time.

Last not least, the game was partially set in the dungeons with
fantasy attributes. And also the city architecture in the 1940s
style... I like that.
