3dgamers are advertising the fact that there is a patch available for
the retail version of DM:MM.

Anybody that has had problems with the game might want to try the
patch. There is an extensive range of crash related fixes listed in
the patch notes.

Thanks Rob but tried it. After several tries, the conclusion is that the
problem is still not fixed. The Event Viewer Application error file
generated is just the same:

Faulting application mm.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module datacache.dll,
version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00009737

What everyone is screaming about in various forums :)

From the website:
"please note that there's still an issue with high settings. The devs are
working to fix it and hope to have it fixed soon. In the meantime, if you
still have crash problems after using the patch, please lower your settings
to improve performance. A future patch will address this issue"

It fixed the problems I had with the game (both steam-installed and
DVD retail) crashing in the "Dead Mans Trail" chapter, so I now
managed to actually advance in the game. Now to finish NWN2 tho, and
then Medieval 2 Total War tomorrow, and CoD3 tomorrow.. Gears of War
next week... Gaah!

3) attempted to re-install

Install now fails!

Info:
Feature transfer error
File: D:\disk1\data3.cab
Error: Incorrect function

Think I've had a dodgy disk all along :-(

And if it fails copying the files you'll know it's likely a fault with
the DVD. As a last resort, if your retailer won't swap like-for-like on
faulty product, you can install Steam and put your key in to download it
via Steam.

To save some bandwidth/time, let Steam verify it and start downloading,
then stop Steam, copy the GCF files from the DVD to your
\steam\steamapps\ folder (overwriting the incomplete files there),
re-start Steam (should be around 75% complete) and validate cache files
when finished, took about 20 minutes for me using this method :)

For those that believe, no explanation is necessary...for those that don't, none will suffice.
