So I go to the Vault-Tec headquarters and get the locations and entry
codes for all the vaults in the area. I finally get around to checking
out vault 87 and it seems like the entrance is in a high radiation
zone. So I forget about it for a while.

Later I rescue some kids from slavers and get access to Lamplight
cavarns and find what looks like a back entry for vault 87. The
problem is that the door to the reactor room is locked and the
terminal next to it has no power.

Now I've got 2 questions:
First, is vault 87 part of the main quest? If so, that's enough info.

Second, if it's not part of the main quest, where do I get the key? Is
it laying around somewhere, in someones pocket, or given to you as
part of a side quest?

I haven't seen this info in any of the guides I've looked at so far,
but perhaps I just haven't found the right guide yet.

Yes.

It is part of the main quest; I seem to recall hacking the terminal to get
in - but have look at this walkthrough:

Anyone else found the forced cutscene in which you are taken to Raven Rock
stupid? I mean, I had Charon in power armor with all my heavy weapons
right behind me and he is just ignored? He would have eaten those guys for
breakfast! Where can I find Charon and Dogmeat after that to get my
equipment back? I know I won't need them or it anymore, but nevertheless.

IIRC, when you "lose" allies they go back to where you first met them
(except for Dogmeat, who sits outside Vault 101 and pines for you).

I played with Fawkes, and he found ME at a certain point.

And yes, the capture was a hamhanded way of advancing the plot.

(worse was how they ignored Fawkes at the end-game... but I don't want
to spoil it for you)

Thanks for the info. But this doesn't really make sense in that cutscene
because either my companions would be overwhelmed too or they would help
me! They could at least show something like the companions dropping too
and the Enclave just ignoring them and taking only myself in custody...

> I played with Fawkes, and he found ME at a certain point.

I met Fawkes outside Raven Rock although she wasn't my companion. Now that
Charon has gone I have taken her but Charon carried all heavy weapons ;)!

I don't yet know what you mean by this but I noticed several times that my
companion was ignored and my own state as well for that matter. Like the
children in Lamplight making a fuss about me but ignoring my mate in full
powerarmor. Or some wastelanders talking tough to me with me wearing the
Ranger battle armor and enough weapons to be obviously stronger than they.

i found this a bit strange too but typical of bethesda

i met with the outcast brotherhood - with starcross paladin who they
hate and they ignore her

i met with the people at big town and they hate supermutants - i had
fawkes with me... who is a supermutant

so they ignore your partners completely

imagine going to a Klan meeting with a black person

doesn't make sense

Yes, I was wondering how come they made no comment about my friend in
Vault 101 when I went back there. You'd think with the issues they
have in there at that point at least some of them would be rather
upset about bringing an outsider to the vault...
