It's hard to miss out on the fact that Doom just turned 30 years old
today. That's right: thirty years ago - December 10, 1993 - Doom was
pushed out on to bulletin boards and FTP sites around the world.

It's hardly worth mentioning the excitement the game caused at the
time, or its long lasting legacy... so I won't. There's dozens of
articles about that on the web anyway (and we've gone over it numerous
times in this various newsgroup every time Doom's birthday has rolled
around in previous years).

So instead of Doom itself, I'd rather focus on the extensive modding
community that continues to tinker and modify the game. I'm only a
sometimes-fan; I only check out a mod once it's become big enough to
be noticed by the media at large. There are tens of thousands of
smaller mods that I never see. I'm okay with that - I've enough games
that I needn't ever worry about not having enough to play! - but I
love that all these mods exist.

Still, some have caught my eye. "Brutal DooM" - in all its
over-the-top gore and violence - remains a perennial favorite (but
play it for how it changes the base game, and ignore its campaign).
"My House" mesmerizes with how it abuses the Doom engine with
impossible tricks. "Total Chaos" shows off how good a Doom engine game
can be made to look. "Aliens Colonial Marines Doom" revises the
classic "AliensTC" to more modern standards. And these are just a
handful of modern mods; there are so many more, if you start digging.

So, sure, congrats to Carmack and Peterson and Hall and Taylor and
Prince and all the rest for making a game with such an enduring hold
on the gaming industry. But my hat's off to all the modders whose love
of the game who have kept it fresh and relevant for thirty years.

Cool, a fellow modder! The coop one looks interesting, but no one to play with anymore.

John Romero himself has released SIGIL 2 today, his new Doom Megawad.

I'm not quite so hostile to the man, but... yeah. Romero's star is
long set, and even in his heyday, he wasn't half as influential as he
seems to think he was. The original "SIGIL" wasn't much fun - it
reminded me too much of the more gimmicky "Doom II" maps - and I don't
expect SIGIL II to be much better.

The man has been riding off his success with Doom for three decades.
Yes, that game is awesome... but that was a group effort, and there's
no indication that - had Romero been replaced by some other level
designer - the game would have been any less fun. All of Romero's
efforts since then have been flops.

So, thank you Romero, for being a small part of the creation of one of
the most-played games ever.

Now can we please stop giving this guy press?

I have been wanting to get into Doom Map making (with modern tools) for
quite some time. Just imagine making a Deathmatch map based on the
layout of the company offices!
