Yes I know your probably all sick of DOOM but heres one more question....

Is it posible to hook up two computers with the use of a serial cable
(but not a modem) and play MultiPlayer that way or does it HAVE to be
through a Network supporting IPX?

Any Help Would Be Great!

It *is* possible with DOOM v1.2 (may be even with v1.1 but I can't
remeber) but I find it a lot too slow. If you really enjoy DOOM, consider
buying two network cards (they are affordable nowadays): it'll play at
normal speed (= __FAST__ ).

You need a null-modem cable, and one of the replacements for SERSETUP.EXE
(they are legion, and available at all of the popular DOOM ftp sites). I've
gotten damn good speed on null-modem connections, better than modem
connections by far. For optimum performance both machines should have 16550
UARTS, but older 16540 and 8250 UARTS provide very acceptable performance (in
other words, don't worry about it too much).

Yes it is - but only with version 1.2 of DOOM. If you haven't already
got the upgrade patch you can download from any site that has the DOOM
shareware version. I know for definite that its at uk.ac.ic.doc.src
/packages/msdos-games/Games/ID - this is anonymous login. The file is
called something like dm1_2rpt.zip (for the registered patch,
dm1_2spt.zip for the shareware patch). Be warned, this rewtdites the
entire DOOM.WAD file so you need 12Meg hard drive space for the
registered version.

This should allow you to use a nul modem cable (serial link) as well as
ordinary modem link over the telephone. It also provides a new level of
difficulty NIGHTMARE - the bad dudes regenerate after 8 seconds - try
getting of the first episode on that!

Hope that helps - Mat ;)

With version 1.2 it is possible. Just run sersetup and that will do the work.
the trouble is that it will only work with 9600 baud. I am still looking for an
add-on that will support 57k and even 115k baud. Ser4.exe should do the job but
it doesn't.

Does anybody know???

Yes somebody knows. I think. Maybe. :-) ...

This is in the FAQ but...

For two players over serial links use BNUDM126.ZIP. It is much better than
ser4 and works all the time. It has options for near everything.

For three or four players over serial links use RMS249B.ZIP. It is still in
beta but it works and has been tested with some long three player sessions.
Soon will be updated to use any topology of serial links instead of just a
single chain - should improve overall performance greatly. Also under
testing will be new Fudge(TM) technology to cut down the amount of
redundant info sent over the links, thus improving performance gratly again,
if it Works(TM).
