It's probably already been mentioned in this newsgroup already, but
here's some more praise for the Classic Doom mod for Doom 3 (
http://cdoom.d3files.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=1&Itemid=6
). Gosh, that's fun gaming. Classic Doom 3 gameplay (albeit perhaps
slightly slower paced) with modern graphics. I especially like how the
levels were revamped; they still have the same layout but thanks to
some good set dressing the spare Doom levels look less like an
illogically laid out maze and more like a functional moon base.
All-in-all, a very satisfying conversion.

Sadly, IDQQD doesn't seem to do anything. And no bio-suits, so stay
out of the sludge ;-)

As an aside, we complain about how short games are today, but I
whipped through Classic Doom in about two hours. Multiply that by
three episodes and toss in a little extra ... did Doom have less than
10 hours gameplay?

Maybe it's just because I have the Doom levels memorized (sad, but
true), or perhaps the keyboard-only gameplay just slowed things down.
Or perhaps I just replayed it so often that it seemed to last FOREVER
(whereas the fifteen-to-twenty hour romp through Doom3 I only wanted
to experience once).

I think your memory is lying to you :D

Back in the day, when Doom took over our lives, for many of us it was
the first of its type we ever experience (noticed I said "most", me
included).

The internet was still relativly new to the mainstream so we didnt have
strategy guides and cheat codes galore. In fact I think I stumbled
through the first doom a few times before I even KNEW there was a way
to cheat. I remember running in fear the first time I ran into a
baron of hell and I ran out of shotgun shells.

I think a lot of us "old timers" are trying to compare new games with
the thrill of the oldm and we just can't get it because it's not new to
us anymore.

Yup - when people say "old games had more gameplay", I'm wondering what old
games they are talking about. Certainly not the ones I played. I loved them,
for sure, and spent many hours playing through them in the late 80's and
early 90's, but it was definitely the (relative) "newness" of PC gaming that
hooked me, much more than the games themselves.

I can remember how many people talked about Pirates! and how much "gameplay"
it had compared to games today. Whenever a discussion got to "gameplay",
"Pirates!" was almost always used as an example of old school gameplay being
superior.

Then it was remade almost exactly the way it was. And while fun, it really
isn't anything special at all in terms of "gameplay".

I've been playing it ... it's a great achievement and fun in 20 minute
blasts. It does make me realise how far level design has come though.
People moan about linear FPS's these days but Doom levels are just as
linear in their way .. most of them are just a hub section with various
spokes down which you have to venture to find keys. And when you pick
the keys up all the walls open and 4,000 imps appear.

I installed it and it looks very promising, but for some reason my CRT
wants to run it in 60hz refresh rate which makes it a mess of tearing
and laggy movement. How can I run it in 85hz like my other games?

I never liked that one. I'd rather wait until the game gives me the
plasma/bfg than have it straight away. and getting all the keys at once
spoils the point of playing the map

I found the answer. Not only do you have to do a r_displayrefresh 85
to get it to run at 85hz, you have to go into the video settings menu
and tell it to reset the video.

Thanks a lot for nothing, fawkers! heheh
