The Carmagedon Splat Pack demo will not run. I get the following error
message.

DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994
FATAL ERROR: Couldn't open General Settings file

I have notice other people have reported the same problem in other
newsgroups. Can anyone offer a solution.

Thanks
Bob

Well, I have, found last night...

From the carmageddon text editor: carm_cv2.zip

In the readme there's the following line:

+Copy the enclosed PROG.ACT file to DATA\ACTORS and now
+Carmageddon will read the unencrypted text files.

+NOTE: This will fix problems some people have been having with
+the 3DFX .EXE.

It fixed it...

The Splat Pack Demo (SPLATMIN.ZIP or SPLATDEMO.ZIP) both coughed
up the same error for me.

After dorking around with the problem, I've got a fix.

1) After unzipping, there are a bunch of directories at the same level
as the \data directory. This is the problem!

Move all of these directories so that they reside under \data. Pay
a bit of attention to the sound directories, as two of them exist
after unzipping... There should be only one, containing the .WAV
files from both, when you're done rearranging the directory
structure.

2) Move all .TXT files from the install directory to the \data
directory.

3) Now go have fun.
