Help!!!

I got Duke3D (cool game, BTW) and it runs fine in Windows95, as a regular
progam and in DOS mode at 320x200. BUT!
When I try to get into the VESA modes, I get an error message "Vesa reports
320x400 is not currently supported" or some such non-sense. When I try to use
640x480 and above, it just locks up and refuses to run. I am running a ATI Mach
64 video card (2Mb) which runs other Vesa games just fine. I've tried the ATI
M64VBE.COM file, AND the Universal Vesa driver included with Fighter Duel, with
the same results always happen. Any ideas? I'd LOVE to run this in a higher
resolution, but if I can't, I can't! (Which also means I'll probably skip this
over as a purchase)

it and I am in the same boat. It is a realy cool game even in

I have an ATI MACH 64 Graphics Expression card with 1MB RAM and I'm
running DUKE3d at a 640 x 480 resolution. The game is pretty fast too.
I'm not sure what your problem is. Maybe you should download the latest
drivers and utilites from http://www.atitech.ca

Assuming you have Univbe - try running VbeTest and determine which
VESA modes are available on your card. Then modify the CFG file
directly. I don't have any video problems - so I can't claim this will
work, however I was able to run 640x350 and 640x400 (the best mode I
think because it displays the full resolution of the bitmaps without
the overhead of higher resolutions) even though these are not
selectable in setup. I was even able to run 1024x768 - although if you
ignore the speed hit, it looked just like 800x600, 640x480, and
640x400.

Hope it helps.

Ok. First, MAKE SURE you're not using emm386, and if you MUST, you
have to put in a command to make it exclude the video bios area (it's
in the help file for Univbe), then, the m64vbe program should work for
all modes but 320x400. I can't get Duke3D to work with Univbe.
Univbe's vesa test reports that everything works, but Duke3D just
freezes after startup when I use it. M64vbe will let it run in higher
res, but not 320x400. In Univbe's help file it sez that 320x400 won't
be supported for Mach64s until the next version.

Duke 3D (as it currently stands) will *NOT* run on an ATI Mach 64. The reason

I should clarify my statement. I was referring (as I said above) to the Mach
64's extended modes, not it's VGA-compatible ones. The game *will* run, if you
get the ATI vesa driver, but not in extended, non-VGA, modes. ATI's VBE driver
apparently puts it into a VGA mode, which is slower (doesn't use much of the
fancy Mach64 stuff) but at least it won't crash.

we've already discussed the bug with Apogee, who have confirmed it and will be
fixing it so Mach 64 owners can take advantage of non-VGA speedups.
