Hi,

I was playing D3 at 1600x1200 with my old CRT. Now I have a new 22"
Samsung 225BW LCD and am stuck in 640x480. I know this because it is
looks terrible and when I quit the game the desktop absolutely looks
like it is in 640x480 mode before it adjusts back to native mode.

I have tried changing the flat panel scaling to fixed-aspect ratio in
the NVidia Control Panel (which works with DVDs so far) that doesn't
make a difference.

Any ideas? I am just getting used to an LCD monitor. I have an
NVidia 7950GT video card with the 91.47 drivers.

Loaded the monitors drivers from the CD? You have the desktop set to
native rez (1680x1050)? What did you set the game rez to?

I've been experimenting with a 19" widescreen tonight and while D3 won't
support the monitors native 1440x900 it did play fine at 1152x964.

Interesting, I also have a Samsung 225BW and an eVGA 7950GT KO 512MB video
card, but the difference is that I am running the official 93.71 WinXP
drivers from Nvidia. I do not have Doom 3 installed on the system and have
never tried it on this setup, but I'll think about re-installing it. When
you restart Doom 3 after changing the graphics options, and go back into the
options, is it showing that you are running in 640x480? I also assume you
have the latest game patch?

At the very least, I will see what Quake 4 does since I do have that
installed already.

Interesting. Same setup here, but I am not running the 93.71 XP
drivers. Like I said, this is the only game so far that doesn't
"adapt". What do the 93.71 drivers do for you? Shall I bother, or
just stick with the 91.47s? D3 and the expansion pack are the only
games so far (including Unreal Tournament 2004) that do not let me
save the resolution change.

Yes, it says 640x480.

Well, I have the expansion pack too. And in order to get either to
run, I had to uninstall both and then let the expansion pack patch the
game to 1.2. I just downloaded the 1.3 patch but am unsure how that
will affect both (I had to uninstall both and reinstall both and let
D3ROE patch the game because neither would run after installing the
1.3 patch)

Yes.

Yes.

I keep trying 1600x1200 or something different than 640x480 but the
game tells me that the changes won't take until I restart the game.
And, it get's reset back to 640x480 the next time I restart the game.

I will try that resolution. Hopefully it IS a resolution <BG>

I applied the 1.3 patch which also seems to apply to the ROE expansion
pack. Since doing so, I can select "Ultra Quality" in ROE and am told
"running Doom 3 in ultraquality utilizes over 500MB of textue memory.
Running in this mode is not recommenede". If I restart the game,
1024x768 is still selected. However, if I still select a higher
resolution then it doesn't stick. The game gets reset to 640x480.

try using the guides here for this and other games.
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php?title=Doom_3

Quake 4 requires the same adjustment to support 1680x1050 16:10 aspect.

Cut'n'paste from the site.
Widescreen Support
Method
This method assumes you have the latest patch. It involves setting a
game var that did not exist in the earliest retail versions.

Go to <gameDir>\base, and edit DoomConfig.cfg.

Find these lines:

seta r_customHeight "xxx"
seta r_customWidth "xxxx"

Change the x's to set your resolution. Now find this line:

seta r_mode "x"

Change the "x" to "-1".
Find this line:

seta r_aspectRatio "x"

If your screen aspect ratio is 16:9, change the "x" to "1".
If your screen aspect ratio is 16:10 or 15:9, change the "x" to "2".

As with any .ini solution, if you cannot find any of these lines in your
DoomConfig.cfg file, just add them in manually.

Quake 4 requires the same adjustment to support 1680x1050 16:10 aspect.

Also, www.tweakguides.com has a good Doom3 section.

LCDs really suck for shooter games.

OK, I have a bit of time now, I will install both Doom 3 and RoE and will
patch to version 1.3 and will see what happens. In any event, I kind of
wanted to revisit these games anyway since I was previously playing them on
a 128MB video card and would like to see them with a 512MB card. I hope I
don't run into the resolution issue that you are having! I'll post again
within the next hour or two with my results.

Haha! I think I know what your problem is. I went ahead and installed Doom
3 and RoE and installed the 1.3 patch afterwards. I went and ran Doom 3
after this (not RoE) and went into the options to change the screen
resolution. 1280x1024 works fine, but if you select 1600x1200 and apply and
restart the game, it will dump down to 640x480 when you restart the game.

I think the reason why this is happening is because of the native resolution
of the LCD being 1680x1050. Since 1600x1200 is using 1200 pixels vertically
and the monitor is only rated as being able to do 1050 pixels vertically, it
is not allowing you to use 1600x1200 in the game. You will probably find
that 1280x1024 works well for you since it's within spec.

Quake 4 supports 1600x900 resolution by default if you select your display
as having a widescreen aspect ratio.

Alternately, try the suggestion posted by Les Steel. Since we have
widescreen displays, this is no doubt worth trying. HTH.

Hi Les,

I am new to this LCD and aspect ratio combo if you haven't been able
to tell! :-)

How can I find out what my screen aspect ratio is?

Not this one. I did my homework but couldn't afford a $1,200 Dell and
either of top ones. I have really started to enjoy my Samsung 225BW
22". So far, no (I forget the correct term right now) "lagging" when
playing HL-2 EP1 and Far Cry. The picture is brighter and it has been
a struggle so far to tone it down but I am not sure I could go back to
my NEC CRT. I should get off my arse and plug it too into my video
card and check out the difference.

Thanks.

You nailed it Wax! 1280x1024 is working in the ROE pack and the game
looks fabulous especially considering it's an oldy! I am going to
next try Les's suggestions next.

I am sorry to be a PITA guys! But I need a lesson on aspect ratio,
native resolution (what the heck are both of those any way?) and other
aspects to LCD WS monitors! I feel like an idiot. How did everyone
else learn this stuff?

What a great bunch of people here!!

Probably been already suggested ...but do you have the latest DOOM 3
patch installed ?...To version 1.3 .
It known to deal with a number of graphic issues.
D3 won't likely run at all on VISTA without it.

No problem. For me, it's just years of experience and seeing my fair share
of weird and wacky problems.
