I've got Mediacom Cable Internet in Missouri, and I haven't been able to get
"Battlefield:1942", "America's Army", or "Counter Strike" to connect to any
multi-player servers.
I searched and found the required open ports (UDP and TCP) for each of
those, and opened them on my router. Nothing.
I even bypassed the router and tried, nothing. (I have no other firewall
software running.)
So, open to the Internet like that, I ran a port scan on myself, and found
all the ports were either closed or stealthed. So, if I have no firewall
running at all, how can they all be closed...unless my ISP was doing it?
Anyone else encounter this?
I have yet to get a hold of Mediacom's Tech Support to ask them about it.
Thanks,
Liam

I haven't a clue about your ISP, but having all the ports on your
machine as closed or stealthed (preferable) is what you are supposed
to have if you aren't hosting any servers. If your router uses NAT
then you shouldn't have to open any ports to join a game as a client.

Believe me, I'd much rather have DSL! Except I live too far away from the CO
to get it. =/
Cable's my only broadband option at the moment.
Unless I got a T1 or DC-3 =)

Yeah, I know that's preferable. Under normal circumstances I run with the
router blocking everything and ZoneAlarm on the PC just for extra
protection.
I ocassionally portscan myself from another computer to see if I'm visible
on the net.
However, since my last OS reinstall I've been unable to play any online
games...although I can do everything else on the net just fine...so I've
been troubleshooting and opening ports on the router. I've even set the PC
in the DMZ, and still I can't connect on any multiplayer servers. It's
really weird.
I know that's not normal. =/
Thanks for replying!

Did you do a netstat to see what ports you do have open on your system
before performing the scan? If you don't have an application running
that is monitoring the port, you won't see anything. The scanner is
looking for services on open ports so no app, no port, no results on
scan. This type of scan is going to work better if you are actually
serving the game. In which case, a response will likely be sent to the
scanner when the port is scanned.

The other thing about games is that they normally use UDP for
communication purposes - no guaranteed delivery - , as opposed to TCP
for connections. So if you are performing TCP syn scans etc. you
almost certainly won't get a response. Take that with a grain of salt
because all games are different and initial connections may require
TCP and all other communication in game is accomplished with UDP.

If you have a sniffer like ethereal, you can connect it to a hub or a
switch with mirrored ports (unlikely), and see what traffic is being
sent when you attempt to connect to the remote server. You can also
see any responses. If you see the information going out and nothing
returning, then the problem is not on your box and contacting the ISP
is a good idea. If nothing is coming out, then you likely have some
sort of filtering going on. This is possible with XP and other OSs
where internal firewalling of some protocols can be done. With XP it
is the Internect connection firewall; local Area Connection tab
advanced properties.

Anyway, it sounds like an interesting and frustrating problem. I wish
you luck with it.

Are you running XP? It has its own built in firewall.

I am having this problem too, suddenly. I noticed before that BF1942
had quit working, and just figured I needed to reinstall it. Well,
DL'd and am trying to run AA, and that won't detect any servers, or
find any master server list. I have a firewall, but I specifically
opened all pertinent ports. But BF1942 and AA both act like I don't
even have a connection. Like I said, BF1942 used to work.

I'm on PacBell in California.

Funny thing is, AA will connect to the login server and upload my
stats, but it won't retrieve any game servers.
