STALKER-COP: Mercenaries? (spoilers possible)

This doesn't really give anything definitive away, but you might not
want to read it if you're just starting out.... SPOILER SPACE
I took the Workshop sidemision and obtained tools from the Mercenaries
by giving them food. At that point, they were neutral/friends.
When I left the Workshop and got outside of the fence, they gave one
warning about having my weapon drawn (I was way outside the fence)
then started shooting and throwing grenades, even though I was out of
range. When I went to the big factory occupied by Mercs (near the
bridge/pipeline), they were marked in red and began firing on me after
warning me to get lost.
My question is whether anyone remains neutral with the Mercs after the
Workshop mission? I'm still neutral with the Bandits.
After the Workshop Mercs fired on me a second time while just passing
by, I killed them off and got some pretty good weapons. Just curious
if them becoming hostile is scripted or not.

Stayed neutral for me. Factory dudes are another cup of tea I think,
they'll be hostile whatever you do with the squad for the warehouses.

I have a feeling all the Mercs are going to hate me from here on out.
They're tough, but a good source of high end weapons... My first
playthrough of Shadow of Chernobyl earned me the shitty ending for
having a bad reputation, which I earned by taking the mission to kill
the Freedom guy. When they attacked me for it, I wiped out their whole
base.
Another case of getting great weapons, but unintentionally ruining my
game. Hope that doesn't happen in Call of Pripyat!

I don't know about the Mercs (I wiped them out as well), but I think
you can actually screw things up pretty badly if you do the "wrong
thing" in this game. Like, I sold a certain PDA early on rather than
giving it to someone later and now I just can't seem to gain their
trust and hence also no access to their more advanced equipment and
possibly some additional missions... :/

I don't think the *real* ending in SOC cares about your reputation. And
mercs are assholes anyway :>
