Splinter Cell: How to use the laser microphone?

I'm at the level where I have to listen to the guys in the elevator... but
have no idea how to do that. I equip the laser mic using my quick
inventory, point at the elevator using mouse-look, and hit 'fire'-- and
nothing happens! Holding the fire button down doesn't help either.

Any idea what I'm missing?

Are you sure you zoomed in? You have to zoom in to use the laser
microphone.

FIRE doesn't USE it. Use the USE key (ENTER by default I think)

Yes. Press E (default).

yeah... like the other posts said... Use the "E" key to equip it... It took
me a few mins to figured that out also.

Note also that you can throw cans and bottles to distract
guards by pressing 'e' when holding it.
