I've been wondering about this too. I poked around the previews for HG2,
and I don't think that coop play is available in the campaign.

But there seems to be a cooperative mode called "Historical" (where's my
mini me?) where a team of 3 players go against AI gears.

No... CoOp v the AI is not supported. Originally there were plans to
support CoOp in Historical missions but the bandwidth required to
support both MP and the AI just isn't available yet (at least according
to the guys at Activision).

HG2 is still the best Mech game out there though even without coop v AI.
