file cannot be played on the specified MCI device."
I have an Monster 3D card, Win98, 98 Megs RAM, 200MMX Pentium. I have

Definitely sounds like a missing or currupted codec. Half-life is
tying to play the opening AVI. There are several things that you can
try. Try to play some other APIs by double clicking on them. If you
get this same message then there are several theings that you can try.
1) Go to windows update and make sure that you have the latest media
player.
2) Try a command switch to put in you shortcut to skip the intro.
3) Uninstall and reinstall the Codecs from the Windows 98 CD.
These are also in the order which I would try them. Good luck.
I have the exact same problem and havn't a clue on how to fix it. I also can't
see the video at the begining of Sin or Battlezone as well.
My error was " Not a registered MCI device"
But I can continue on to the game at least.
How do I reinstall the "CODECS" (?)
I'm on win95.

To reinstall the codecs, you could go to the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in
the control panel. Under the Windows setup tab, you should see a
checkbox for multimedia which you should double click. In the next
dialogue, you should see a checkbox for "video compression". If that
box is unchecked, click in the box to place a check by it and hit OK.
That will install the codec. If the box is already checked. Uncheck
it and that should uninstall the codec. To install it again go back
to the dailogue and check the box again. That should put it back on
your computer.
I might recommend checking first to see if there is an updated version
of media player as this is likely to have some of the updated video
compression codecs with it. I'm not sure though as I am using Windows
98 and don't remember much about the video aspects of 95'.

Go to the Windows95-'System Control' and select 'Software'. This is where
you usually install/uninstall Software. Select Windows-Setup and make
sure, that the 'Multimedia'-box is checked.
This solved the problem for me.
Hope it helps,
