I see so many intelligent ppl in usenet (not to mention the fewels)
but yet so many of them dont make the move to forum based websites
where their views / opinions can be appreciated by so many more
people.

If you get a chance, have a look at the new http://www.avaSAY.net/
site, they are still setting up and people who make the move early
have the chance to become regular visitors and respected without much
effort.

Cheers

And be further fragmented by the hundreds of different webboards that are available.
People are here because they _don't_ want to use several different webboards to find
a consistent community, plus the fact that web-based posting still sucks compared to
proper Usenet newsreaders.

And you get out of this...what, exactly? No profit to be made by this service at
all?

This is because web boards suck.

Do you have access figures for both this newsgroup, and your crappy web
forum?

Why don't you come here where "so many intelligent ppl" are "(not to mention
the fewels)", instead of wondering why we aren't going there? One of the
reason we stay here is to avoid the (mostly noise) forum based web sites.
Besides, usenet is a lot less hassle to use if you have a good newsreader.

Thay goes without saying. Message filtering, bulk download for offline
reading and flexible threading/sorting options (IF you use a decent
newsreader that is) are (for me) indispensable features of Usenet news...
The only thing worse than web based news forums that I can imagine are web
based chats (one word, er, acronym: IRC)

The dumbest thing you can do is pump all your input into some company's web
board. One day you visit and see only, "due to changing market
conditions..." and everything is gone.

Indeed, unfortunately people seem to be learning that the hard way. The usenet
gaming/tech newsgroups are far less populated that they used to be, and that's too
bad as the webboard I've been on before were up and down so often you wonder why you
ever bothered.

As opposed to Usenet?

Not that I'm a fan of web boards by any means, but....

The phyco's live *everywhere*, dude. Witness the Derek Smart
threads on the Space Sims newsgroup, and that's NORMAL on
Usenet. Hence, my *very* occasional postings. Sure, my
opinions are just that, OPINIONS, but I can't say that I like
something without 15 strangers jumping down my throat on why
I'm a stupid newbie because I didn't complete RTCW in 8
hours. Fortunately, I don't come to newsgroups for an ego
boost, just for occasional hints when I get stuck.

All that I'm saying is that one can get their teeth kicked
in by cocky assholes whether it's on Usenet or the web.
No difference. Excepting of course that the web groups
take *much* longer to download then text only Usenet.

I'm afraid I don't see how that's any different from Usenet. :)

Actually, I'd love for there to be a good place to go chat about games in
real time. I like what Gamespot is attempting... but unfortunately the
average age of the 4 or 5 folks in the chat room is about 9 or 10.

And web board can have advantages in that their scope can be narrower (e.g.,
a specific game web board).

However, Usenet will always be the best place for news and opinions - if you
can get past all the holier-than-thou attitudes.

That's because intellignet people prefer the speed and ease of use of
Usenet.

And not to mention that web boards require a user login and password, plus
they are moderated by the religious right wing. Say no to censorship! :-)

The only webboard on gaming that I've found to be any good is the one at
Something Awful. Since it is moderated and registration is $10, people tend
to not act like morons for fear of the banhammer. They do tend to be more
console oriented, but I do a bit of console gaming and don't mind <hugs the
Dreamcast>. The other drawback is that the total audience is smaller, but
they do get a good amount of traffic.
