Pirating cunts and DRM whiners strike again. Looks like Ghost Recon
online will be the only GR game from Ubi for a while. I wonder what
this will mean to Rainbow Six: Patriots?

whoosh, this really is your bad hair day ...

There're people who get supremely pissed off at the weather, working
themselves into a frenzy and having aneurysms and all kinds of shit
(aka "turds") thrown at them from various self-inflicted wounds,
causing them to be even more pissed off and eventually dead.
Whereupon in a final insult, they get douched.

"Ubisoft" is just another mega corporation and its founding members
knew about and have contually known about every variation of computer
software piracy from the start. ubisoft spokespeople can assign
credit and blame for its actions however the company wants, but that
doesn't exactly give an objective POV.

A different but related example: STEAM couldn't exist without the
internet and EVERY SINGLE CHARACTERISTIC that makes computer software
piracy a fact of life, so every characteristic that from the beginning
ubisoft has been aware of. I suppose one day it could happen that
official and unofficial spokespeople for STEAM might blame those who
don't subscribe to its "service" for periods of comparative
unprofitability - and might castigate those people as "pirates" and
"vermin" and so on, for that totally ridiculous and made up reason.

Here's another article about the computer games market, that doesn't
point fingers:

BF3 and MW3 are probably part of the reason they made the decision
they did. From an investors standpoint, the Ghost Recon series is
trying to revive itself against two monster franchises, which is a
hard sell these days.

It's not as easy as simply saying "okay, we are going to make an
outstanding game". There's risk involved all the way through, and
since the primary following for the Ghost Recon series has been
largely competitive multiplayer, it probably doesn't make much sense
for them to even bother with a single player campaign.

I never even played the original Ghost Recon, but I knew guys that
made a career out of the multiplayer, it had a follow much like
Rainbow Six multiplayer games. GRAW 1 left me uninspired and I never
bought GRAW 2 but got a free copy with a video card, and the
multiplayer was actually quite good if you're into tactical shooters,
and people were playing it years after release.

So, if that's their target market, why would they be wise to release a
single player game that will get more uTorrent downloads than sales,
and a bunch of reviews will pan the campaign without realizing the
real game to review is the MP game modes?

I hope to see the trend continuing of separation between MP and SP. I
like them both, but there are great MP games that should never try to
cater to SP audiences, and vice versa. There are plenty of both going
around but its better to have a clear line between them.

Well to me they are all missing out, if they think that SP is getting
Pirating (the XBox is getting the same with Pirating & the legal
Pirating with shops selling 2nd hand games) why don't they do more co-op
in the SP story with more then 2 players, you need up to 4 to 6 players
to make this work right.

It will not be Pirated as you will have to login the same as MP, look at
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 it's getting very old & is still played in co-op,
because its fun even with the old maps, if ubisoft came out a new map
pack for it would sell big time. COD MW3 and BF3 was a big let down for
co-op with only 2 players.

Hell I have 4 mates that play a lot & we have to play 'Vegas 2' with
some 'OF Dragon Rising' now & then, I think that co-op could be the next
big thing if done right.

Just my 2cents

I can't say I've researched what their thoughts are on all this, but
if I were them I would say well a co-op mode is nice if it is a
bolt-on to the Ghost Recon Online (and it may be, I dunno), because
that ensures proper authentication to central servers, but to rely on
co-op as an anti-piracy measure, its not worth it, people would just
use Tunngle / Hamachi / GameRanger.

So, I had some good times in Vegas 2 (both competitive and co-op) and
maybe they will do something similar with the new free to play stuff.
Only time will tell if its a crappy f2p game.

Good point, but it will have to have LAN to use them, with no LAN it
would have to have authentication to central servers.

True, although I'm not aware of many games that have co-op without
LAN. Also if it's going to be played strictly in pirated form on
Hamachi or whatever, there's not much to stop central authentication
from being cracked out of the pirated version.

The free to play thing of course solves this completely, (as does
things like globally tracked ranks and unlocks) making the reliance on
central servers deeply rooted in gameplay (thus much more than simply
authenticating the user) and harder to remove.

The piracy arguments forwarded by these brain dead idiots has been well and
truly proven wrong by everyone from Gebe Newell to Notch, with lots of indie
developers in between.

Make quality game and don't turn your customers into criminals and you will
succeed.
