BF3 and MW3 are probably part of the reason they made the decision
they did. From an investors standpoint, the Ghost Recon series is
trying to revive itself against two monster franchises, which is a
hard sell these days.
It's not as easy as simply saying "okay, we are going to make an
outstanding game". There's risk involved all the way through, and
since the primary following for the Ghost Recon series has been
largely competitive multiplayer, it probably doesn't make much sense
for them to even bother with a single player campaign.
I never even played the original Ghost Recon, but I knew guys that
made a career out of the multiplayer, it had a follow much like
Rainbow Six multiplayer games. GRAW 1 left me uninspired and I never
bought GRAW 2 but got a free copy with a video card, and the
multiplayer was actually quite good if you're into tactical shooters,
and people were playing it years after release.
So, if that's their target market, why would they be wise to release a
single player game that will get more uTorrent downloads than sales,
and a bunch of reviews will pan the campaign without realizing the
real game to review is the MP game modes?
I hope to see the trend continuing of separation between MP and SP. I
like them both, but there are great MP games that should never try to
cater to SP audiences, and vice versa. There are plenty of both going
around but its better to have a clear line between them.
