Because... you can never have enough cheesy strategy titles, I guess?
Thanks GOG.

Essentially a not-so-good "Heroes of Might & Magic" (and yes, I'm
aware the franchise preceded the HOMM series by some years). Honestly,
it's biggest selling points these days seem to be the... well, go look
at the linked page and you'll immediately see them. They're not in the
games, but they always are prominently featured on the box art. ;-)

But free is free. You have three days to claim the games.

Thank you, I added the game's 'assets' to my collection. I might even give it
a go at some point.

I know I played one of the HoMM games and enjoyed it, I still don't know
why I never bothered to play another.

Perhaps you played HoMM 3 which was the best in the entire franchise
so maybe you decided why bother with any of the others?

(I'm not saying it wasn't; I honestly can't remember)

but I think it is just as likely that there was so little
differentiation between the various iterations of that franchise that
it seemed pointless to keep at it. It's sort of like the "Assassin
Creed" or "Far Cry" games in that regard.

Hmmm. I wonder if there's any sort of relationship between those
franchises... ;-)

HoMM 3 was a bigger version of 2 which itself was a bigger version of
HoMM 1. HoMM 5 was just HoMM 3 in 3d instead of 2d.

What I am trying to say is.... you aren't wrong.

With that said, HoMM 4 was different from the other games but it was
not well received.

Probably was 3. It was around 1999-2000, when HoMM 3 came out, and
someone loaned it to me (not a game I would've bought new.) I had
just started a new job and had to travel for training, was set up in some
corporate long-term hotel and brought my giant desktop and a small
monitor so I'd have something to do after work. Unfortunately the travel
ended up with me having a serious ear infection with 104 degree fever
and the worst pain I've ever experienced (and I was paralyzed with back
pain for some time years before.) The hospital gave me a large dose of
Vicodin (and antibiotics) which just made me feel like I was going to die
if I went to sleep and didn't really do anything for the pain. I was in no
shape to work so ended up playing it for several days with little sleep
and high as a kite. That may have influenced my opinion of it and
also my reluctance to play another.

It got me through a hard time, but would the others live up to that without
the medication and fever? The memory was painful as well, so maybe
association like touching a hot stove.

I honestly found 2 more enjoyable. The HoMMs after that were far too
fiddly and made the factions were made more generic. And the Redbook
opera music in 2 was amazing.

The original HoMM has too few options; HoMM 3 has, IMO, too many and
surface and underground maps added, IMO, unneeded complexity. HoMM 2 is
baby bear for me.

It is also the first one I played, though. Nostalgia may be getting the
better of me.
