It doesn't run that well, but it really
depends on what you feel is acceptable.
It was able to achieve greater than 10 fps on a 486 33Mhz
at 320x200 with the screen at about 50% of full. At full
screen about 7 or 8 fps max. When action is heavy frame
rate can fall to below 3 fps, which makes it like a Slide
Show.

I disagree, i run a DX2/66 with 12 MB RAM and rarely drop
below 15 fps in standard mode, mostly sits at around 20 or so, and get
around 8-10 fps in 640X480 (i dont consider that fun, but its not a
slide show). But on a DX/40 with 8 MB ram, it might not be too great
but i seriously doubt it will be a slide show.

I have a 486 33 and without sdd52 I get about 7fps in VGA mode and with
sdd52 i get anywhere from 10 to 15 fps. However It runs too slow for
internet or modem play. BTW i running at full screen. then only time
it becomes a slide show is when im fire the devastator.

I've been running Duke on a simular config of:

486 Dx 33
8 mb ram
paradise 1mb video, vesa (on motherboard)
Univbe51 video driver

And what i get is this:

At 300*200, 3 channels of sound..8 bit mixing, full screen:

6-20 fps, but drops to as low as 2-5 fps when in small areas with many
monsters near ya.

At 640*480, 3 channels of sound..8 bit mixing, full screen:

3-4 fps, and will drop to 1 _easily_ when near any hallway or when a
creature or 2 come near.

Now, i can get 10-15 fps(640*480) if i shrink the window size to about
1/6 the screen, but once again when any creatures come near the frame
rate drops..but may stay above 5.(ie.. somewhat playable)
You can shrink it to 1/10 the screen and get an average fps of 15,
however, you will be playing on what seems like a 2 inch t.v. :(

The fastest levels seem like the first two in episode one, and Raw
Meat..Movie Set..L.A. Rumble, and especially the Staduim(fastest fps
of any of the 3 episode levels).

My advise: If you _love_ Duke..and need a smooth frame rate in the
modes above 320*200 then get a P133 or higher with a fast video card
if you wish real smooth like frame rates, on all the modes up to
800*600. (if you can afford one)

(However, i'm still using a dx33, and even though i shrink the screen
to 1/6th in 640*480, it's a heck of alot better then spending $2000+
on a new P.C., just to play Duke3d.
If you're _big time_ into games..especially 3-D one's in high res.
modes, you _must_ get a P133 or higher system.)

640*480 and 800*600 seem about the same, so with say a P133, you
should average 30 fps..easily at 640*480.

And what i mean about smooth frame rate, i'm speaking of a fps rate of
18-30+ a sec. Heck, anything above 15 fps seems smooth to me.
Some other folks simply cannot play below 25fps..it's just a
preference.

Hope this help,

Phil...
