But if source textures weren't very good this may be a waste of time?

Its not the texture pack. Just some detail textures and upscaling.
"We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that
will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage"
That's not going to save these textures. http://i.imgur.com/z8uDh.jpg

It's the mayor's office in Wellsprings. It's persistent, game's just not
very good with details:

It's pretty awful.

The textures on many things are jarringly poor and drag you right out
of the game world. You shouldn't be thinking about the poor quality of
textures whilst playing a game.

Being impressed with the graphics in a game drags you deeper into the
world. Seeing things that you saw when you played Quake 2 and
Half-Life has the opposite effect.

The whole Rage experience has left me with a very bad taste. Id was
one of the last bastions of PC centric gaming. Now even they have sold
out.

Who's left now? Just Valve?

Valve? Who is only releasing commercialised mods these days
and made a complete joke out of episodic gaming? Where is
HL2:EP3? I don' care about another pimped up MP mod!

You don't change as the years pass do you?

You need a new hobby I think. This one has eaten you up inside.

At least iD has a new game-engine and is finally giving some real
attention to its deficiencies on the PC. Carmack is a technical
perfectionist and game-engine genius. The current PC graphics trials
may be strongly tweaking his technical conscience.

How in the world could a person be "eaten up inside" by opinions about
games???
A long time ago Valve broke into business publishing Half Life, a
monster hit of a game. It didn't even use that much of a new engine,
it was just a game that hit all the right marks, right from the
beginning, for an absolute shitload of gamers. Then came HL2 and,
surprise, meeting "Barney" again, and a pet facecrab and a crowbar.
HL2 was a wild ride down a glorious corridor with all kinds of strange
"reminiscent" stuff, a memory lane, and it was a good solid game. But
Valve hasn't published anything substantially new after that and
certainly they haven't attempted something on the scale of Rage.

I hope you're right.

My original point was that Valve might just be the last big name
studio that develops games for the PC first and foremost.

I expected the sniping about Valve from certain people because it's
never been possible to discuss that studio without the same two people
and their various socks posting their usual boring herp derp about
Valve/Gabe/Troika/VTMB/Ferrari.

I can't think of another big studio that doesn't now develop for
consoles first and foremost. With id now looking to the console
platform first, the PC is a pretty low priority all round now. For the
big boys at least.

I find that rather depressing.

hmmm, what comes first to mind is that it's only you and a certain
very prolific poster to this group who claim that opposing views to
yours come from "sockpuppets". And there're only one or two of them
running a whole slew. I'd say that's a wierd POV except that I happen
to know that it's true and I know this because I personally run most
if not all of the suckpuppets posting to this group -- meaning that
just about every post except your own and those of your own
sockpuppets are written by me.

I don't have the STEAM beef that drives a lot of this, but still
really don't see Valve as a cutting edge PC-first type of developer.

Sure, their primary delivery platform is custom made for the PC, but
that just seems to be a happy coincidence. The Source engine was
already looking old when the original Crysis was brand new.

See, they're making games for the PC first, but they're not making
anything that takes advantage of that fact. Source is a stripped down
old klunker that runs fine on consoles.

No, not as long as Valve doesn't change ;)!

> You need a new hobby I think.

You know my hobby pretty well I think :). But honestly, I'm mad
about Valve because I'm waiting to finally play HL2:EP3! Didn't
they promise us quicker releases due to episodic gaming? You
have to admit that they completely messed this up and just keep
the waiting crowd occupied with their "mod-games". Don't get me
wrong, I think it's great to get ideas from the modding scene and
turn them into professional games, giving young coders work at
the same time! But according to interviews, these guys are doing
the brunt of the work for the "mod-games" that Valve releases, so
what does the core Valve crew do? id did Rage in the meantime!
