I miss Tribes 2.

So, what is Midair like?

Obviously I should try it on Steam if/since it is free to play.

Dunno 'bout Midair; never heard of it. I generally distrust games that
are free-to-play, so I'm in no rush to play it either.

One of the earliest games I ever played featured a jetpack: HERO.
(okay, technically it was a helicopter pack, but the principle is the
same ;-). It's not a game I would recommend today; it is nostalgia and
not the game's quality that makes me remember it. And while on the
subject of ancient games, let's not forget Jetpac either.

Dark Void - an otherwise forgettable B-list FPS from 2010 - big hook
was its jet-pack. Well, that and its pulp sci-fi vibe. As I recall,
the controls of the jetpack were a bit wobbly and the combat was too
arcade for me to find it that enjoyable, but I loved the game's
overall vibe.

The last-gen Star Wars Battlefront games featured classes that had
jetpacks. They were probably better described as rocket-boosters since
it was less maintained flight and more a thrust-accelerated jump. Even
Star Wars Shadow of the Empire had a jetpack (so did that PS2 Boba
Fett game, now that I think of it)

Section 8 was basically a knock-off Tribes game: opposing teams
battling in different weight-classes of powered-armour on far-off
planets, yeah it's Tribes. And yes, they had Jetpacks.

Hell, the various Mechwarrior games all had jetpacks. Well, jump jets
but tomAYto, toMAHto.

Red Faction Guerilla, several of the GTA games, Halo Reach, and a host
of other titles had jetpacks in them too. Gamers like jetpacks, I
guess ;-)

I think the only one I ever played was Outwars (1998) - limited thrust
jetpack, hrm very much like the one in Duke Nukem 3d come to think of it
- it could thrust for only so long then needed to recharge so you had to
think about how to get through certain levels since you couldn't just
fly through it all.

Also had a glider attachment later in the game so you could boost up and
then glide to get places farther away.

Begging for a remake - preferably without QTEs and other "The game is
playing you" nonsense.

Project Nomads had a jetpack too, although it wasn't a core component
of the game-play. Not that anyone remembers that game; it was an odd
2002 FPS where you had to defend your floating islands (your /mobile/
floating island, just for extra weirdness) through traditional FPS, by
flying an airplane, using turrets, some shallow RPG elements and - yes
- jetpacks.

Project Nomad is /not/ a game that is crying out for a remake; it was
a smorgasborg of ideas, none of which had been given the time to hone
to perfection and the whole was weaker than its parts. Still, I
wouldn't mind seeing a re-release on GOG that fixes various
compatibility issues with newer hardware.

Jetpacks! Jetpacks are everywhere!

They certainly are everywhere in your posts... Not sure about
reality.

For some reason this discussion is reminding me that when he was
introduced, Superman couldn't fly, just jump really really far. :)

Well, it certainly would be odd /not/ to mention jetpacks in a thread
discussing jetpacks. And I wouldn't want people to think me odd ;-)

Let's see, what other games utilize jetpacks

Duke Nukem had jetpacks. The one in DN3D was a bit of a pain to use;
its fuel never seemed to last long enough to get anywhere neat, and it
made you into a big fat target as you slowly moved through the air.
The jetpacks in the original platform games were more fun.

I vaguely recall one of the Donkey Kong games had a jetpack. Which
only helps to prove the ubiquity of jetpacks if even monkeys with
bamboo-technology have them.

Apparently Fortnight is getting jetpacks too. Can't say much about it
since a) it isn't released yet and b) I don't play Fortnight.

Secret Weapons of WW2, the expansion for Battlefront 1942, added
jetpacks. At least in the matches I played, everybody rushed for the
jetpack.

I think one of the James Bond games also let you use a jetpack. I'm
pretty sure it wasn't a PC game since I seem to recall fumbling about
with it using a gamepad.

Planet Harriers was all about the jetpack. I never played it - I
wasn't huge into arcades - but I remember how cool it looked.

And of course, the ultimate: Goat Simulator. Because if there's one
thing a goat needs, it's rocket propulsion.

So don't tell me jetpacks aren't everywhere; the evidence is strongly
to the contrary ;-)

The only game I ever played where I had a jetpack was City of Heroes.
The version of the game I bought would give every character I created
a jetpack. I could fly up and forward with it for 30 seconds every 2
minutes or something like that. It was very useful for my first
character as I opted for Super Speed instead of flying. It gave that
character some much needed vertical capability. :)

Had to look this up to be sure, but MDK2 had jetpacks also!

How was it? From some Googling it looks pretty cool but something of a
late game thing. I did well enough with ordinary armor so I didn't much
bother with power armor. Also the "ballistic weave" for ordinary clothes
is ridiculously powerful.

Dan Dare 3 (Atari ST) had jetpacks. Played the demo of that a thousand
times!

Elex also prominently features a jetpack (really, rocket-belt). It is
a third-person RPG rather than an FPS though. But the device is rather
integral to the game (since enemies do not politely wait to attack you
one-at-a-time as in many melee fighters, combat would be impossible
without the ability to jump out of the mob).

I don't recall if they were mentioned yet, but the Titanfall games
also prominently featured jetpacks. The whole jet-pack assisted
parkour (JPAP;-) was one of the games' major hooks (the other was, of
course, the giant mechs... which also had jetpacks).

It's useful for getting up some place once in awhile, or hitting as
you're falling to prevent death, but it's not enough you can just hover
in the air. More of a 'super jump' type thing. There's mods though
that improve it I believe.

I found it minor but fun. I just like power armor, but it's awhile into
the game before you get enough batteries to use the armor to use it much.
