What worries me is the fact that the mag says something about these
games using a similar engine to Rott. Not a very good omen if you ask me.
Does anyone else know more about these games, including when they're due
out ?
Thanks
-> According to PC Zone's June edition this is one of four new 3D games

That's the press for you. One, they are only published in Europe by US

Press foul up again. The game engine is the same caliber as Dark Forces
with bridges, overlapping rooms, vehicles to ride and many other things.
George Broussard, Pres., 3D Realms
Hmm, US GOLD is producing these games??? I thought it was 3DREALMS, a
subsidary of Apogee. I, from the info I have, thought the engine is vastly
superior to the Doom engine. Doesn't sound like PC ZONE knows what they
are talking about.
Quote from the Apogee MAY 1995 Catalog
"The following four games use 3D Realms' "Build Engine which is far more
advanced then id's Doom Engine. These improvements include, looking up/down,
reflective floors, mirros, true rooms above rooms, multi-colored lighting
<DOOM only had white lights>, moving vehicles, translucent spirtes for
ghostsm explosions, windows, etc.>, rotating sprites, bridges and
overhangs, high-res mode for Pentiums..."
And these games are:
Blood
Duke Nukem 3d
Ruins: Return of the Gods
Shadow Warrior.
If you would like more information, downloaded Terminal Velocity, the first
3D Realms game released. It has the newest Apogee catalog, which I just
quoted.
Speaking of Duke Nukem 3D. Has anyone commented on the PCXs? If you
download the 1.1 patch for TV, it has a zip file of PCXs of Duke Nukem
3D. They look pretty good, just wished they would fill up the whole screen.
I was very impressed by PCXs, and pleased that they had inserted them in
the TV Patch file. Still, you can't job a game by its cover, so the
wait continues for Duke Nukem 3D. Keep up the good work 3D Realms, the
TV Patch is a good improvement on a great game IMHO.

Nooooooo. They'll use Apogee's much vaunted (on alt.games.apogee, at least)
new build engine, allowing for exceptional customisability, and a very
flexible 3D too - morphing wall textures, PROPER 3D (dark forces like)
etc.

It definately doesn't use the Triad engine. Check out the screen shots -
non orthogonal walls, SVGA, "true" 3D (six degrees of freedom? I'm sure the
Descent FAQ author will argue this one. Relentlessly.). It actually looks
really good, with the trademark Apogee cheese that somehow works.

In fact the four games mentioned use Apogee's 'build' engine, a different

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APOGEE & 3D REALMS NEW RELEASE INFORMATION FOR 1995
11/4/94
NEWS FROM APOGEE
================
We expect 1995 will be Apogee's most exciting year ever. We know the
past year has been disappointing for our fans and that except for
Raptor and Wacky Wheels, we don't have much to brag about. You've had
to endure EGA games in 1993 and frankly some of our latest releases
left much to be desired. No more.
Our new rededication to high quality, exciting action games with
cutting-edge technology will finally bloom in 1995.
We are focusing our resources on cream-of-the-crop games with
something new to offer in terms of technology or gameplay, and we've
got a lineup that we think will excite you.
APOGEE SOFTWARE
===============
Here's a rundown of Apogee games that will be released in 1995/96:
* Rise of the Triad -- Technically a late 1994 release, this
internally developed game has incredible variety and high-action
playability. Sure, the 3D engine is not the most advanced on the
market, but we still feel like this will be one of 1995's biggest
shareware hits because of all the cool features the game *does* have.
The game has had favorable previews in Computer Gaming World,
Computer Player, Computer Game Review, Game Bytes, and PC Gamer. The
game supports modem and 11 player IPX/SPX networks. Release: Dec
1994.
<snip>
3D REALMS ENTERTAINMENT
=======================
3D Realms is a new label that Apogee will use to release only the most cutting
edge 3D games on the market. If a game is released by 3D Realms, you can bet
it will show-off leading-edge 3D technology. We have five games currently in
production. [The fifth was Terminal Velocity - Charles Gregory.]
<snip>
NOTE: The following four games use 3D Realms' "Build" engine, which is similar
to id's DOOM engine, but with many advancements. These include looking up &
down, reflective floors, mirrors, true rooms above rooms, multi-colored
lighting (DOOM only had white lights), moving vehicles, translucent sprites
(for ghosts, explosions, windows, etc.), rotating sprites, high-res mode for
Pentiums, user-modifiable parameters, underwater swimming, and much more. Of
course, these games will have modem and network play.
These games have already been previewed very favorably in magazines such as PC
Magazine, Strategy Plus, PC Home, Compute and Electronic Entertainment.
* Blood -- A horror game in which the player can become a raging beast that
needs to kill to stay alive. This will be a gut level game designed to
terrorize and surprise the player. No corner and no dark room will be safe.
* Duke Nukem 3D -- Picks up where Duke II left off, where Duke heads back to
Earth only to find it has been captured. Duke lands on a space station in
the first episode, then proceeds to Los Angeles. Cool effects include being
able to blow up buildings with the most powerful weapons, fly in a jetpack,
or board a subway system.
* Ruins: Return of the Gods -- When exploring in Egypt, you uncover the real
truth of the pyramids. This action game places a lot of emphasis on
exploration and puzzle solving. The maps can only be described as HUGE.
A high action game set in an immense world.
* Shadow Warrior -- In Japan, a cult of demonic believers have seen the sign
that their mystical leader who, after a 1000 years of imprisonment, has
finally come back to lead them. Before all hell breaks lose you must
infiltrate their fortress and kick cult butt (as a Ninja, of course). Plenty
of cool Ninja weapons plus magic and mystical enemies to fight.
IN CLOSING
==========
The coming year will be Apogee's proudest. It's the result of a new commitment
to quality and cutting-edge technologies, and over a year of restructuring and
repositioning Apogee. We hope you will like what you see. Gone are the days
of EGA games, small scale games, or games that just suck!
Sincerely,
Scott Miller, President, Apogee Software
George Broussard, President, 3D Realms

Gee, that is pretty crazy that you "played it at E3", considering there
was no keyboard attached to the machine. I think you meant to say that
you watched a demo of it at E3.....
Just setting the record straight.
No people outside of 3DRealms have played it yet.
Anyway, the games, "William Shatner's Tek War" and "Witchaven" are
well along in development. Playable demos will be out sooner than you
think. The finished games will be out this fall.
You may already have gotten a peak at the games if you were at E3.
Ours was the booth with William Shatner behind it and 600 people
standing in line in front of it. Not only that, Tek War got a
Strategy Plus cover inset a month or two back. Witchaven got the
whole cover of a recent Computer Game Review.
If you'd like to check out some screenshots or get some info about the
games themselves then get thee to the IntraCorp home page. You'll
find it at http://www.gate.net/~intracor/
Yes we will be getting a big sexy server and a nice fat T1 within a
couple of months. For now, though, we're okay where we're at. The
point is, we're here. Stop by, read about the games (modem, network
play, plots etc.) One caution: the pages are always under
construction and always will be. I will have fresh screenshots up by
the end of the week along with a more detailed description of Tek War.
One more thing, Cybergate's anonymous FTP limit is 20 at a time. When
the demos hit the Internet there's gonna be a bottleneck at
Cybergate. I'll FTP the games to WUARCHIVE and anywhere else I can.
If anyone can point me to a relatively easily accesible, anonymous FTP
site (I'm sure I don't know them all) then please do so. I'll give my
28.8 a workout on demo release day.

Hi G.B. !
You became my favorite company already .75 year ago.
I want to know, are you going to put Duke Nukem in svga too ?
And what about Build Engine ? Will you sell it out (Tek War) or
will you co-operate with company's like Id did ?
I'm very interested of any information about your company and
cant wait till full TV, Duke Nukem and other to play some
deathmatch (so called) with friends. I know, your games
will rule the world. Keep on !
With best wishes General ZanaC !

Already in and done. Duke can do nearly any resolution, but anything
above 640x480 is insane.

We licensed the engine to Capstone.

Duke Nukem 3D should be out by September. We are playing DeathMatch
every day on the levels, teweaking them.

Glad you like the "piccies." Tek War runs smoothly in 640 x 480 on a
DX4 100. On a P90 it will be amazing.
Hmmm...I see a lot of posts about how bad Descent and Magic Carpet are on a
P90, and I just don't agree. At work: P90, 32Mb RAM, Stealth S3-Trio video
card. This machine runs MC at hi-res (with sky and reflections turned off)
fine. As nice a frame rate as my 486-66 8Mb PCI in low res. For Descent, I
have to run with detail set to med to get a decent (;-) frame rate at 640x400.
And, since lowering the detail in Descent sucks, I run in 320x400. But a
P-120 would do the game justice.
Anyway, as long as Duke 3D has a 320x400 mode, I'll be a happy camper (even if
I have to overclock my poor 486-66 at home to DX2-80)
You listening Apogee?

Of course :0 DN3D will support many resolutions, to make you all happy.
Obviously, the higher you go, the slower the game goes :)

Have you seen any screenshot of TekWar of Witchaven ? They are (almost)
as good as 3D Realms releases, because of the same engine.
Better take a look and then come back again.
G.Z.
Dosen't the P-120 bring the bus rate down to 60 mhz (60 mhz x 2 = 120mhz) as
opposed to the P-100 running at a 66 mhz bus rate (66mhz x 1.5 = 100). The
P-120 might run games slower than a P-100, depending on if the game needs a
faster cpu speed or a faster bus rate.

Tek War and Witchaven demos will be out soon!!! I will go out on a
limb and say they'll be ready in first half of July. They could be
ready a little earlier. They could be ready a little later. If we
suddenly start encountering major crash bugs; who knows.
W/o totally backing off my earlier statement I will say the Tek War
artists have added a helluva lot in the last few weeks. Remember,
this is a work in progress. The maps are amazing. TW will definitely
take advantage of speedy CPUs.
Based partially on the feedback from this newgroup we are moving
towards a minimum system requirement of DX2/66 w/8megs. The
programmers and artists will take the Build to it's limits. The
producers' (Brandon Chamberlain and James Wheeler) main concern is to
put out the coolest, funnest game possible. That, they are doing.
Thanks to the Internet feedback, James and Brandon have been able to
keep the marketing folks (wonderful as they are) at bay. Before they
heard of the Internet, marketing people used look at things like
"installed base." If the 486/33 is the machine most people have, they
used to think, then any game we make must run flawlessly on a 486/33.
Thanks to the Internet, those days are over. They are listening to
gamers not demographers.
All I can say is wait for the demo. It'll blow you away. While
you're waiting, though, check out the TW and WH screenshots at our web
site.
Okay, disclaimer time: Everything I just wrote is subject to change
at any time. Had to say that.

These games are cool!!! These ain't no Operation Bodycounts. We
repent.
Speed: as far as speed on lower end systems goes, remember, TW and WH
are under development. The guys are adding, expanding, tweaking,
improving, etc., every day. How fast the game plays on 486's can
literally vary from day to day depending on what's new in a particular
map.
We're adding new things everyday, too. For WH, for instance, Brandon
cut a deal with the Blackstone Armory to provide totally authentic
reproduction medieval weapons for WH. The artists are working
overtime to get them into the game along side the cool medieval
weapons they've already put in. (New weapons should not affect speed
that much. Anyway Witchaven runs slightly faster than Tek War because
of the map design. It's got more tight spaces and narrow passages.)
Tek War (especially outdoors) has open spaces and moving vehicles and
subways. Of course WH also has moving "things" as well (don't want to
give to much away.)
A little more on Tek War, William Shatner was in the lab last week to
shoot the footage for the full motion video sequences that will be
interspersed throughout the game. (Bill will let you know how you're
doing, he'll also probably scold you if you start mowing down
civilians.) With Tek War (although you can kill everyone in sight)
the designers added a bit of realism by making you pay the
consequences for your actions. If you shoot a civilian not only will
you have the Tek Lords and Tek Goons after you, you'll also have the
cops. Of course identifying the civilians can be a bit tricky.
The Tek War AI is also excellent. Tek War baddies just don't stand
around waiting to be shot. They've got a few tricks.
One more thing: don't forget the modem and network play options.
Right now TW and WH can accomodate up to 16 players with ipx network
support. We may have to bring that number down a little bit as we
improve the maps. We'll see...

I played an Alpha of Tek War an ws impressed with the engine, even though
the graphics weren't really done yet. But the overlays that were there
were better then
some of the stuff out there at retail.
Definitely looking forward to this one.
