I think we should make a demosceners' purity test, similar to the sexual
purity test or the programmer's purity test...

I'll need help thinking of good/interesting/amusing/appropriate
questions...
I've only been around since 1992, so I'm not an 'oldskooler'. Anyone
who has been in the scene for a long time is *highly* encouraged to add
questions to this test... :)

Some sample test questions (you get one point for each "yes" answer):

Do you know what a "demo" is?
Have you ever seen one?
Have you seen at least 8?
32?
128?
1024?
Have you ever made one?
Have you made more than 4?
16?

Have you ever made your own graphics library?
Was it based on Denthor's?
Do you have a copy of Ralf Brown's Interrupt List?
Do you ever use it?
Do you use Tran's pmode?
Do you remember when he first made it?
Do you use assembly language?
Do you use it in C/pascal programs?
Have you ever written an interrupt handler?

Do you think about phong shading when you look at a toilet seat?
Have you ever wondered how life gets such a high frame rate?
Can you tell the difference between 60fps and 70fps without special
equipment?
Do you see toruses and ducks in your sleep?

Have you ever entered a demo in a competition?
Did it score in the top ten?
Top 3?
Did it get first place?

Have you ever written self-modifying code?
Did you do it on purpose?

Have you ever written a scrollie?
Was it impossible to read? Could you read it anyway?
Have you ever used more than two scrollies at once?
Have you ever watched a demo multiple times just to read the scrollies?

Did you cry with joy when ST3 was finally released?

Do you own a GUS?
Do you get teased for not owning a GUS?

Have you ever been to a demo party?
Have you been to more than one demo party?
Four parties?
Sixteen parties?
Have you ever organized a demo party?

Do you own any hornet CDs?
Any Bjorn Lynne CDs?
Any Andrew Barnabas CDs?
Do you decorate your house with junk CDs?

Were you in the 'scene in 1996?
1995? 1994? 1993? 1992? 1991? 1990? 1989? 1988? 1987?

Have you seen Second Reality?
Have you seen it more than 8 times?
Did you watch *all* of the credits?
Every time?

Have you ever written a plasma?
Fire?
Water?
Vectorballs?
Copper bars?
Shadebobs?
Vectordots?
( ... )
Have you ever made a 3D engine?
Did it support textures?
Shading? Reflection/environment mapping? Shadows? Translucency?

Have you ever written a modplayer?
Do you write mods?
Have you ever participated in a tracker flame war?
Do you have any 4 (or more) star songs on hornet?

Do you know the difference between a demo, a trackmo, an intro, a
megademo, a dentro, and other types of demos?

Have you ever run "deltree windows"?
More than 4 times?

Do you use linux/freebsd/other unixes?
Have you ever written a multiplatform demo?

Do you read c.s.i.p.d?
Do you subscribe to demonews?
Traxweekly?
Do you read any diskmags?

Anyway, suggest more questions... (especially if they're amusing, or
will really make someone feel like a geek if they answer "yes")

Here's my list of suggestions - in the appropriate places, of course. I
have about 5 minutes to do this before my Econ midterm, so I won't be
able to contribute much, but here goes:

: Some sample test questions (you get one point for each "yes" answer):

: Do you know what a "demo" is?
: Have you ever seen one?
: Have you seen at least 8?
: 32?
: 128?
: 1024?

1024's a bad number because I do not think there are that many demos out
there. Of course, I may be misunderstanding the point of this :)

: Have you ever made your own graphics library?

: Was it based on Denthor's?

Have you ever made your own <xxx> library?
Have you ever tried to sell it?
Have you ever sold a copy of it?

: Do you have a copy of Ralf Brown's Interrupt List?

: Do you ever use it?

Do you have a copy of <insert huge print-out thing here, like Intel's PDF
manuals>?

: Can you tell the difference between 60fps and 70fps without special

: equipment?
: Do you see toruses and ducks in your sleep?

Do you stare at things in the real world and think they would be great
demo effects?

: Did it score in the top ten?

: Top 3?
: Did it get first place?

Did it get first place in the wrong competition?

: Have you ever written self-modifying code?

: Did you do it on purpose?

Does it crash on Pentiums [i.e. Amnesia]?

: Have you ever written a scrollie?

: Was it impossible to read? Could you read it anyway?
: Have you ever used more than two scrollies at once?

Have you ever read more than two scrollies at once?
Have you spent more than an hour in total deciphering scrollies?
Do your eyes permanently wander left/right/[direction of scrolly travel]?

: Do you own any hornet CDs?

: Any Bjorn Lynne CDs?
: Any Andrew Barnabas CDs?
: Do you decorate your house with junk CDs?
: Were you in the 'scene in 1996?
: 1995? 1994? 1993? 1992? 1991? 1990? 1989? 1988? 1987?

Before C64s?
Before PDP-10s?
Before the Mark I? [reference to the first machine at Harvard]

: Have you seen Second Reality?

: Have you seen it more than 8 times?
: Did you watch *all* of the credits?
: Every time?

Have you memorized the credits?

: Have you ever written a plasma?

: Fire?
: Water?
: Vectorballs?
: Copper bars?
: Shadebobs?
: Vectordots?
: ( ... )
: Have you ever made a 3D engine?
: Did it support textures?
: Shading? Reflection/environment mapping? Shadows? Translucency?

Have you done all these at the same time?

: Do you know the difference between a demo, a trackmo, an intro, a

: megademo, a dentro, and other types of demos?

Do you care?

: Do you use linux/freebsd/other unixes?

: Have you ever written a multiplatform demo?

... that works on VCRs?

: Do you read c.s.i.p.d?
Do you check csipd every 5 minutes?
: Do you subscribe to demonews?
Do you print out demonews?

A "pure" scener is one who has a lot of experience in the scene. Or,
someone who has been in the scene for a long time, has been very active
in the scene, and who has used several different platforms for demos.
So, people who have made demos for both the amiga and pc are probably
more "pure" than people who only use one platform. Anyone who still
supports old hardware should get bonus points... (for example, anyone
who makes demos which go full speed on a 486/33)

I don't want this to be just a PC scene test, but I've never been a part
of the amiga scene or c64 scene. So... Feel free to add questions.
:) (the more, the better)

I'm not a huge FC fan, but they have been one of the landmark groups of
the scene. I'd like to include references to all the major groups and
best demos from the beginning of the scene until now. (again, I've only
got PC experience, so someone else will have to add questions about
amiga/c64)

As for PC questions, can anyone think of obscure references to certain
demos, people, or scene events? (things nobody would recognize unless
they were paying attention to the scene)

First I'd like you to define what is a "pure" scener ? Pc scener ? Amiga
scener ? Or maybe even a c-64 scener ? Your questions clearly assume that we
are talking about pc sceners, so maybe you should call it pc-sceners purity
test.

Also, please turn "FC praising mode" off ;-) and keep that OS shit out of your
test, since that has nothing to do with the real scene...

Just my 'old skoool' thoughts..=)

Not when I'm looking at our toilet seat, but I do think of
bumpmapping when I look at it ;-)

There may well be 1024 demos. I've got about 700 and only stored the good ones.

Some more questions for you:

Do you know what address the port of your soundcard is without
thinking?

.... In descimal?
.... In binary?

Have you ever seen a effect you made, heard a sample of yours or seen
some graphics you have drawn in another groups production?
.... Without your consent?
.... Did you hack them?

Have you ever been swapping by snailmail?
.... Did you send / recive more then 4 letters before you tired of it?

Have you ever made a fake production to mess with another group?
.... Did you actually publish it?
.... Did anyone belive it?
.... Did the group in question belive it?

Have you ever written a scroll text?
.... That was longer then 64k?
.... Did you actually use it?
.... In realmode?

/end of inspiration :)
