Demo parties in USA other than NAID

Question: Are there any other demo parties/gatherings/get togethers/ORGIES in
the North American continent other than NAID? Anyone planning on starting
others? NAID's cool and all( I plan to go this May), but seeing how the
European demo parties sprout faster than a third world nations population, I
was wondering why the same is not exactly happening in the US/Canada. (Maybe
we should get rid of our condom * metaphorical reference *)

Well, as for big 1000-people-or-more compos, NAID is the only one I
know of (I remember in the past there being a thread about one
possible one coming up in October in Silicon Valley, CA, but I haven't
heard anything since).

Mostly what has happened over the past year aside from NAID are what
people seem to be an "Impulse Infestation"... i.e. small mini-parties
of 10 to 50 people that last over a weekend, the name coming from I
think GD's "Mini-Impulse" party last year. I was at one over New
Year's weekend called Resolution (in Baltimore), and there was another
one in Chicago simultaneously, the name of which I can't remember (was
it Tempest? Fill me in here, Trixter.... :)

These mini-parties are a lot of fun, and I think they're holding
people over until NAID comes May 31, and also to compensate slightly
for our lack of other, larger parties. Judging from my recent
experience at Res, I'd very much like to attend more of these
mini-parties (been debating on holding one myself in mid to late
summer after Naid, as a matter of fact).

That's as much as I know. :)

I'd love to see some party here in Silicon Valley. It's a great place to
hold one, aside from not being in Europe. ;) Someone could rend an
exhibit hall of the Santa Clara Convention Center for the party, and
there's lots of good stuff here. If there were any demoscene people in
large quantities, it might work better.

GD/Hornet and myself planned on a 100-200 person party last summer called
"Impulse" in upstate NY, but due to lack of interest on the part of local
universities & other sites it was cancelled. Floss/Kosmic-Hornet planned one
called Awakening in WA next month but that has been cancelled too. So besides
NAID, no major demoparties are planned in this hemisphere, sorry.

As for small gatherings and get togethers, there have been many, like SoCal
near San Diego, Surreal in Chicago, Mini-Impulse in central NY, and Resolution
in Baltimore. But these have just been real small, like 5-20 people.
Nevertheless they've been fun, and anyone like yourself can throw one.

As for orgies.. well.. I won't get into it. :)

I don't get it. It's not a reference to Capacala, is it? :)

.. as for just _why_ there are 10 billion parties in Europe and one here,
it's because demoparties are pretty much a Euro-culture thing. We're too
damn lazy over here to do anything like that, and we have "better" things
to do, you know, like sell Win95.

Maybe we should plan one? I bet we won't have people
cancelling..."Mommy, I'm going to a Demo Orgy..." :)

What would you call it? "Impulsive '96"...

I wonder how many people will misunderstand the intent behind this one.
Anyway, another part of the problem is population density--in Europe
people are pretty much crammed together like sardines. Here, you can
drive for a hundred miles and not even see so much as a gas station,
except for up in Yankeeland. Because of the greater population density,
Europe can have a party in one place and expect a high return from merely
the people all local to that one place.

Whereas here, if someone held a party in Houston, we may not even see
anyone from Dallas.

Yeah, it might :). The obvious reason behind the lack of a west coast
demo scene is they can pretty much pick and choose a computer-related job.
(I've heard of so much San Francisco & Seattle based Internet/software
design/engineering it scares me). Plus the weather's nicer too,
no need to get trapped inside coding and tracking. :)

To be honest with you, I think that's the reason why there aren't so many
good coders around here. I certainly am not one. I've been middling
along withth modula-2 and gcc for some time now, but no incentive to
improve much. About the jobs...well...it's pretty amazing. As a 15 year
old I got a job as an assistant sysadmin, then again the next summer, and
all the big companies are hiring like mad. It's amazing. Maybe I'll
take some time to learn asm this year and try publishing some sort of
demo-like piece, but it's just not all the much of an in-demand skill
around here. ;(
