LAN Console works with V7R1, but not V5R4

Hello,
I have a 515, with no OS installed. I have CD sets for V5R4 and V7R1. If I boot from V7R1 DVD, I can get the LAN console to work, ready to install i/OS.

However, I only have a license for V5R4, so I'd prefer to install that.

On booting from the V5R4 CD, it will not connect to LAN Console, either using Operations Console V5R4 or Operations Console V7R1.

So, is there any special magic to getting V5R4 LAN console to work, which is not required for V7R1?

If I had a license to V7R1, I'd cheerfully install that instead, but I already have a license to V5R4, and going up to V7R1 is going to be thousands of dollars, which I cannot justify spending yet.

Thanks

Garry

Yes, you need magic :-)
normally the "9407-515" is connected with a "HMC - Hardware Management Console", so you can configure it over this (very normal xSeries-like) Linux/Windows-Server.
If not ordered with that, second possibility is a "Green Screen-Terminal" with "Twin-Axe-Cable" and a Connector to a 9-pin-Adapter-Card in a PCI-Slot of the 515.
That is the normal "first" output device for a "AS/400" (or modern names).
So, if you have such Terminal-Adapter, plug everything in and get after IPL of V5R4 the output.
It's possible, to deactivate it with deinstalling this card and priciple possible to activate LAN over the integrated little green Display and the service-buttons, but that's lot more complicated.
here you can get a lot more infos:

and I will try to send you a PM.

gives more about the different possibilities for basic configuration.
The Twin-Axial-Connector, described inside is a 2746, it looks like a normal RS232-25-pin plug BUT ISN'T, same for the 9pol-type, the pinout is totally different, so don't mix them.

I know the 515 can use a LAN console at V5R4, but the only thing I can
remember about it is that it was a b* to set up. That was a long time
ago...

the B* is only the IPL-Site, to boot from, that's not simular to Diskdrive-Names but nearly:
A boot with temporary installed Fixes (PTF)
B fixed PTFs only - "normal boot"
D from external Tape or CD/DVD
