Is there a command that will simply get me a list of files or libraries that
are saved on a tape. I have been playing with DSPTAP and it either gives me
way too much or nothing that I can use. I am just interested in getting a
simple print out to put with each tape as a catalog. What is the best way
to this. Date and size would be nice as well.

Are you using the defaulted parameters? DSPTAP with *LABELS (the default)
gives you a list of files on the tape, sorted by location (sequence on
tape), along with block size and number of blocks (together gives you file
size), the system it was created on, and the file date. The report header
also gives you the tape volume information (volume id, density, etc.). What
more would you need?

I've always just done
SBMJOB DSPTAP01 +
CMD(DSPTAP TAP01 OUTPUT(*PRINT) ENDOPT(*UNLOAD))
and attached the resultant printout to the tape.

I was hoping to get a total for the amount of space used so that I can tell
how much room I have left on the tape and how much has been used. Is this
possible. Thanks for the info that you gave. I helps alot.

With our 3570 tape device, the LCD panel on the drive shows the % of tape used.
I don't know if other drives show you this. If you have a 3570, you could do
the DSPTAP data(*SAVRST) and note the value shown on the LCD at the end of the
DSPTAP option. You would probably have to do it interactively to catch the LCD
value just before the tape *REWINDs or *UNLOADs.
