CWBTF0023 - PC file description file was not specified or is empty
Why does this happen? I am uploading a tab delimited spreadsheat
(*.txt format). I see that under details there is a check box next to
"Use file description" and then there is a space with a file ending in
a *.fdf extention. I understand this is important and from what I
assume you need it to upload. So how do I get it to upload?

If the original data was an Excel spreadsheet, then take a look at our
CVTXLSDBF(Convert Excel to Database File) command. It will allow you to
upload Excel spreadsheets to an AS/400-iSeries file.
It even handles multiple sheet spreadsheets. Visit us at

You need to create a PC File Description File (I think that is what FDF
stands for) that describes the fields that you are uploading. If you want
to see what one looks like ... download a file from the AS400 and save the
FDF file to your PC. There is an option to do so.
What I have usually done is exactly that ... normally I am updating or
inserting into an existing file so by doing a download of the fields I need
from that file I get an FDF file that I can use to upload my Excel
spreadsheet.
The best way of uploading from Excel to the AS400 is using the Excel Client
Access Data Transfer Add-in that comes with Client Access but it is only in
V5R1 (I think).

2/download the target file as comma delim. This will create the required
.fdf file automatically. Then upload the data, specifying that .fdf file
name.
If the c/a excel toolbar isn't visible, try going into tools/addins and
checking it there. If it's not there, you have to install it.. (easy to
do, don't worry)
