I have a requirement:
1. To generate a html page (which may include style sheet or other embedded
objects) using simple substitution methods.
2. The resultant page would then be written to the IFS.
3. The html page would then be converted to a .pdf document on the AS/400.
4. The .pdf document may then be emailed, http served or whatever.
I am confident that steps 1, 2 and 4 are readily achievable. I am
interested in anything that will perform step 3.
I have searched the web and this group and found references to software that
will convert AS/400 reports to .pdf etc but I've not seen anything that
satisfies the html to .pdf AND native AS/400 aspects of this requirement.
Does anybody have experience of this? Vendor responses invited provided
they satisfy both aspects of the requirement.
Regards,
Bob.

Some days ago, I have downloaded the latest version of JTOpen (aka IBM
Toolbox for Java) - and there are new classes for "report writing".
Look at -> http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/v5r1/ic2924/info/rzahh/reportwriter.html
There you will find some classes and some examples for report writing
with XML or JSP to PCL or PDF context.
I'm sorry, it's not exactly HTML -> PDF ... and it's also not "ready-to-use"
tool, but with some programming, I think you can do the job.
HTH and bye
Daniel
If you are using a newer AS/400 (>V4R4) you could use Java tools, for
example FOP from Apache.
But this tool needs XML Files with fo as Input. Have a look at
http://xml.apache.org/fop/. I don not no about a tool that converts HTML to
XML FO's. I have not testes this yet on a AS/400 but with a JDK >1.2 it
should work.

if you work with Java on your AS400 you can use the free iText.jar (
http://www.lowagie.com/iText/ ) library to create PDF, HTML and XML in
the IFS. I like it because its free and you can run the programms
directly on your as400 without any addional hardware.

Matthias

The CVTSPLSTMF (Convert Spooled File to Stream File) utility was

One current user is using OctoPDF capabilities instead of printing a
14,000 page report, whose cost would normally be almost $500 alone.
Check out the website www.octopdf.com or call me

Given that one could install PASE and run AIX binaries I think this is
probably the way to go. Does anyone care to share any gotchas or thoughts
on this method before I spend (read waste) too long on this too?

Before you go out and install PASE, you might want to take a look at the new
Scriptura product from Inventive Designers
