I would like to develop an application taht will use a configuration
file to build a screen. This file would contain information such as
row/col , field size , input ability, etc and use 1 exfmt command in
the rpg code to display this screen. I do not want to write code to
build an SDA file and compile it on the fly. Any ideas?

Hi Jerry,

It's been a while ... but you'll need to look up the USRDFN keyword on
the DDS manual and then find the manual that describes the 5250 data
stream in detail. Used to be called the "5250 data stream functional
reference" or something like that. I tried to find a link to it in the
AS/400 online library but could not get access. I'll try to find it
tomorrow and send it to you. Get ready to kiss your sanity goodbye.

You might want to also consider the Dynamic Screen Manager APIs. Same
story on the link to this manual (but the are in the "System Programmers
reference" manual.

Good luck.

Since you know the row, col, ... of the fields you want to display,
why not use the WRTSRC qusrtool. It allows you to write records into
a source file I know this is not as elegant as using API's but it just
might allow you to accomplish your task while still retaining your
sanity! Of course you will have to do a lot of error checking to make
sure everything is valid and that the file compiles but it shouldn't
be too bad.

Good Luck!

I have done something similar using a fields defined at the same position
with different lengths and then controlling which one is displayed using
indicators. We use it in our general insurance system to allow users to
design their own input screens.

If you need more details, let me know.

Martin

This manual is no more available, but 5250 data stream is described in
one of the 5494 manuals and these manuals ARE available in AS/400
