If you designate a field as being data type Z (timestamp) in the DDS for a
physical file , when does this get activated. The RPG "write" opcode doesn't
seem to do anything? Thanks.

I think you miss understood what timestamp means. Timestamp simply means it
is a field that can store both the time and the date. You still have to put
the correct time and date in it before "write" to the file.

Hi,

Unless you use a logical without the timestamp field described. However,
you can't read it this way neither, which makes it only valid for external
logging purposes.

Regards,
Paul

Here is a place one might want to get one's feet wet with triggers. If you do have a field that you want to be a real timestamp, then write a short trigger program (use Pete Hall's example for instance) and set the trigger to fire on the field when ever the conditions are met. Works like a charm and you can add in other stuff like "updated by:". There are considerations, but it is effective.

Thanks!

However, I couldn't get this to work.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, but I didn't really understand your answer. Would you have time to
put together sample code and e-mail it to me?

Thanks!
