We are trying to find a way to print barcodes from AS400 spool files on our
networked HP Laserjet printers. ( Specifically HP Laserjet 4 + ) The
particular printer in mention, currently is designated as OUTQ PR11. Has
anyone had success doing this?

HELP!

It is usually pretty simple. Use a print file to generate the spool file
and ensure your HP has bar-coding fonts installed. It seems like I've had
a problem with HP4's. I think I may of had to change the DEVD for the host
trans option to *YES? Not sure though.

Hi Chris,

I have done this many times in the past. There are several ways to do it,
but essentially you need two things. First you have to have a font that
prints barcodes. You can usually print the resident fonts from a printer
menu. For HP printers, I have bought a font cartridge that has the barcode
fonts (I bought a card called "Barnone" ).

Second you have to execute a PCL command to "turn it on/off". I have always
done this directly in the document by imbedding the PCL myself, but I am sure
that there are "softer" ways to do it.

For example, to print a postal barcode on a Lexmark Optra you'd type

<Esc>(15Y<Esc>(s1p12v0s0b0T <your data> <PCL to return to original font>.

There are alot of posts on how to embed the <Esc> sequence. I modified a
Printer Definition Table (PDT) and made vertical bar | equal '1B' (Hex code
for Esc).

Good luck
Bill

We're doing it with no problem. If you don't have it working yet you
can contact me for configuration details. We didn't have to do anything
special.

Chris, we are using a software called 'Spoolmaster/400', which has many
advantages beside the possibility to print barcodes.

For your request: the so called 'barcode feature' is able to print many
kinds of barcodes without any downloadable font.

Chris

The other alternative is to look at the Zebra software package. This is
able to print to specific printers or Zebra's own printers.

We still make PCL bar code font sets and they work on virtually any computer.
You can see samples of them at our web site:
