Hi all,

I know no thing about AS400. But I need to get data from it to use on an
internet app im making. The web server is not in the same network as the
AS400 so I figured that the only way to use the info is to export it from
the AS400 in some sort of delimited file.
Is this possible?
The info I need is all the products of the company, so I figure its a table.

TIA,
Jeff

Hi Nick

You can either use File Transfer which is an option of client access or use
the ODBC Interface. Depends on the release. From V4R1 up you can even FTP
the file from the AS/400 to a PC.

Well there are many ways... First, If you have Client Access, and Excel, you can
import directly in Excel from the AS400,,, MS/ACCESS can use odbc drivers to
import data.. If you need more info,... Write back

There are several things you can do if you have all the pieces in place.

If you cannot set up Client/Access for connection reasons (an IBM AS/400 PC-
side product), then you can:

1) use AS/400 CPYTOPCD to copy a database file on the as/400 to a pc-format
file in a directory on the as/400. the resulting file will be a fixed-width
text file.
2) map a network drive on the PC to the directory on the as/400
3) open the file with the appropriate PC application software such as Excel

If you actually had a Clinet/Access connection to the AS/400, then it would
be even simpler. You could run an Access, Excel, or any other ODBC query
directly against the database file on the AS/400.

There are also tools like "Sequel" for "Advanced Systems Concepts" that run
on an AS/400 and will create HTML or EXCEL files from database files and send
them to a directory on the AS/400 or e-mail them to you. But that is a
full-blown SQl and report writing tool and is fairly expensive.

good luck,
Kirk

Jeff,

If you are interested in a commercial product check out our Alliance
CrossData/400 product. It can turn any AS/400 database file into CSV,
tab-delimited, and other formats. Without programming. It can also copy
the converted data to an IFS or QDLS folder for use by a Client Access
user, or for access in a web environment.

If you need to get the data transferred to another system, you can use
CrossData/400 and FTP Manager together and automatically update your web
server running on another system.
