I am using an old IBM 7857-017 modem for EDI (app is TLE). This beast has
worked perfectly for the last eight years, with no problem at all. Suddenly
today, our EDI app is generating an error when trying to dial out. Our EDI
people are insistant that it is a modem problem. Everything looks fine with
the modem, and absolutely nothing has changed on the config, but to be
honest, I don't know how to test/troubleshoot it from the AS400. I've called
the telephone number from a normal phone, and the modem responded and
handshake appeared on the display. If I look in SST after the failure in EDI
there is an entry under communicaton entries, saying 'clear-to-send not
ready on modem interface'. I have spent five hours this evening trying to
figure this out. It is not an area I understand well anyway, which adds to
the nightmare. I have other modems connected to the as400, and I've tried
swapping the cables between these and the 7857, and changing the resource
name on the lind, but it still doesn't make any difference. Also, I cant
use the cable into the 7857 in any other modem, so I guess it must be
something to do with the configuration. My questions are, how can I
actually find out whether this modem is faulty (i do have my doubts), or how
can I configure one of the other modems to take on the role (they are all
attached to v.24 ports, I think). The other modems I have are.
Options IBM - Used for ecs (but redundant now) Model/Type 2720-001
USR Sportster Voice - used for text messages to my mobile Model/Type
2745-001
Can anyone guide me through this confusing mess?
Many thanks in advance
Bob
I would power off the modem, IPL your system and then do a manual vary
off and on of the modem, check the lights on the modem. Does your
application use ICF??
I would do all this then try the application again. Is this a manual
dial requirement or automated via the modem or ?? If it fails look up
any message ID's in QSYSOPR and write them down and then see what they
say to possibly resolve it. Have you put on any PTF's lately, what OS
version and CUME level are you on.
Boy have I learned a lot this weekend!!!! :-)
