I have been trying to get the POP/SMTP mail server going on the AS/400.
I have had no luck at all. Has anyone got this to work? We would like
to have our AS/400, which is running V3R7, act as a postoffice. Our
clients are PC's running Microsoft Outlook. I have checked the
information at IBM's web site and while I think I have followed the
directions to the letter, I cannot make it work.

Is there a way to tell if the mail is even getting to the AS/400? I use
WRKDSTQ and the QSMTPQ never has anything in it. What are the mose
basic entries (as far as directory entries, etc..) that will make it
work?

Thanks in Advance.

Hi Robert,

I have our SMTP/POP3 server up and running just by following the basic
steps in the Redbook Cool Title about AS/400 and the Internet. In addition
to some internal usage, we also use it to send messages out ot the internet
which works fine as well.

Maybe you can try to TELNET to the SMTP or POP3 port to see what they
return. In addition checkout the logs of the jobs on the AS/400.
Especially SMTP jobs do log quite a bit if they are configured well.

Regards,
Paul

Bob,
Also make sure you have started both your SMTP and POP servers.

When you are connected to AS/400 by W'95, use the Windows Explorer to find
QTCPTMM on your AS/400 and normally you should see all message boxes you
created and if there is something in it.
If both servers are started, be sure to specify in the DSTQ that the
addresse must be SMTP and define a decent adress in SMTP. I hope that your
server name is also correct.

Greetings,

There is a class available for free on the Web at
http://www.softmall.ibm.com:80/as400/ebiz/courses.html

The queues will rarely have anything in them. The mail is put in
"mailboxes" (stream files) almost immediately.

Bob:

Note that the queues might never have anything in them. In your case, it's
probably not worth looking. The queues are SNADS distribution queues, used by
SNADS to pass e-mail through the "gateway" from, say, OfficeVision to SMTP.
If your e-mail arrives SMTP for a POP user, the queues don't enter the
picture, unless I'm badly misunderstanding how SNADS/SMTP work together.

From the AS/400, you can use the DSPLNK command to see if mail is arriving in
mail boxes as follows:

===> dsplnk obj('/QTCPTMM/MAIL/*')

If you have the authority, you should see a list of subdirectories beginning
with 'qlockbox'. The list should have an entry for each POP user you've
defined so far. If you take option '5=Next level' for any user who is
supposed to have e-mail, you should see *.NOT objects of type STMF, one for
each piece of e-mail for that user as long as the mail hasn't been
downloaded and deleted from the server.

As for the minimum to get it going, well, I'm not sure. I guess if you aren't
using SNADS for any of it, you might get by fairly simply. I've never looked
into what the "minimum" would be. However, if you clearly follow the approach
in the configuration guide, you should come pretty close. Besides, you need
to do a lot of the SNADS configuration side of it because that's where the
e-mail accounts get defined. Might as well do it right from the beginning.

Can any of your POP accounts SEND any e-mail?
