You should be checking the tape statistics on the AS/400 and see the amount
of Read/Write errors you are getting.
Replace those volumes that have a large amount. Some companies define a
amount of time from the date of purchase,
but in some cases you are removing tapes out of service that are still good.

from a command line: strsst
Then Option 1 - Start service tool
then Option 1 - Product Activity log
then you have two options available:
4. Work with removable media lifetime statistics
5. Display or print removable media session statistics

I only instruct operations to replace backup tapes if I see permanent
errors on them. I do this by going in SST/Start a service
tool/Product activity log/Work with removable media lifetime
statistics/1/2 inch cartridge tape. This display will indicate
errors. I also watch the temporary errors for a large number of hits.
After reviewing I delete the tape stats so the next check does not
include what I've previously followed up on. I get very few errors on
my 3570. In addition, if I do see errors and the media is fairly new,
I contact my vendor for free replacements.
