Hi everybody,

Is they're an AS/400 emulator available (free or $) for the PC
platform ? I mean a software that mimick the environment, not just
let you run AS/400 software. That would be good training material.

Have a look at Baby/400 (California Software, I think)
But if you just want training material, a second hand AS/400 would be
better, IMHO

Hi Console Cowboy,

i dont want to take your hope, but i think i will be very difficult to
get a AS/400 emulator. When i started to work with AS/400 Systems, two
years ago, i was also searching for a emulator. Without success.
But i have two little tips for you:

First try to get IBM education software on CD. If you have never worked
on a AS/400 before try to get the "Knowing your System" CD.
If you dont know someone who could copy this CD for your, try asking IBM
direct. Pherhaps the will send you this CD. But its only for the first
step.

The second, and better thing, is:
Try to get an old IBM AS/400.
I bougt a AS/400 D20 Typ 9404.
This is a cisc systems and many companys who changed to risc Systems
scrap their old systems. Its very slow, BUT almost all commands in the
operating system (V3R2 is the hightest Level for cisc systems) you will
also find in the actual releases. And believe me, on this old system,
there is enough to learn. ;-) And the best advantage is: You will get it
as present or you will pay only a few dollars. ( I payed 25 Dollars
aproximatly in German Marks, for a 9404) ....

good luck and best wishes

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the CD tip.

That's where it get somewhat more complicated. I had read somewhere
that the license for OS/400 is not transferable, thus you are supposed
to buy a license if you use a pre-owned system. Not that I would
loose any sleep about running an unregistred copy of OS/400 for
educationnal purpose ... Anyway, I might be totally off-track, so
please correct me if I am wrong.

Secondly, used AS/400 are'nt exactly common at swap meet ... I had
tought for a while of acquiring one through online auction, but I
don't trust these much. I'll have a look at it anyway.

Secondly, you must know what you buy ! I found a few AS/400 FAQ on
the Web, but I have not found a ressource that described
out-of-production model. Any suggestion ?

Thank you for your valuable comment ! :-)
