A while a ago we bought some IBM SLR5-4GB Data Cartridges. 4 of the 5
weekdays we use these tapes to do backup on a V5R1. The other day we
use an old Imation SLR5-8GB tape.
The save operation is OK. It takes about the same amount of time to
save on all 5 days.
But when we DSPTAP or CHKTAP on these SLR5-4GB tapes we get "Volume
on device TAP01 cannot be processed" message. On the old SLR5-8GB tape
it is fine.
The strange thing is that if I put these saved SLR5-4GB tapes on a
V5R2 box they all work! (you can DSPTAP or CHKTAP). The two machines
have the same tape drive.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

It may have to do with how they were tape inited coming from the factory. I ran
into this on the magnus 2.5's that they used to come as qic2gb and now they
come as qic2dc which is different. So I have to first initialize them as qic2gb
so they are interchangeable.

just a thought.

Very seldom..
I think the SLR5-8GB is just the same Tape as SLR5-4GB..
some manufactures choose this description because it can have max Cap. of 8
Gb when compressed
(I have an imation Tape SLR32 which is actually a 16gb Tape)

so do you have really the same tape-drive ???

and when you do a dsptap on V5r2 Machine which density does it show... ???

Yes. They are all of type 6382. (shown via WRKDEVD DEVD(*TAP)).

QIC4GB.

I just saved a single lib to this tape and it works (can DSPTAP).
It may have something to do with saving too much stuff (3.5 hours save
operation).

I wonder if this something a PTF would fix or maybe IBM needs to create a
PTF. I have a similar problem that I have not called IBM about yet. On our
810, V5R2, current cume, 4GB QIC, using Sony SLR5 tapes, I save four PF's to
tape. Take the tape to a 170, V5R2, current cume, 4GB QIC, and try to read
the tape or just display. Sometimes it works OK, most of the time I get the
same error you're receiving.

I would make sure you are at the current cume for each OS and do a search
for PTF's on D/T6382 and see if there *any* PTF's that are not installed for
this tape drive.
