Hi all,

I'm looking for information regarding printing MICR characters from
the AS400. I know that third party software solutions exist but I am
looking for a 'native' solution. I would like to be able to specify
within my printer file, program, etc to print the MICR characters.

I heard that an RPQ (8A8083) is required for this. I have ordered the
RPQ and am awaiting it's arrival; however, I cannot find any info on
font numbers, DDS keyword, etc.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

I used the font C0R0AE13 (MICR E13B-roman med 10-PT) which I found in
QFNTMICR2 library on the CD. The following is the DDS will print the MICR
to an AFP printer.

A R PRTMICR
A FNTCHRSET(C0R0AE13 T1001032)
A SMICR 40A
A POSITION(&NDOWN &NACROSS)
A NDOWN 5S 3P
A NACROSS 5S 3P

If you use host print transform to an non-AFP printer, you consume a lot of
resources. Also, the resulting output is very large. So, if you are
printing a number of checks to a slow printer or over a slow communication
link, you'll be very disappointed.

We were forced to write programs which converted the spooled files directly
to PCL and not rely on IBM's output. For example, a single check was over
100K using AFP or HPT. Imagine printing 100 checks over a 56K frame relay.
When we wrote the PCL ourselves, we ended up with about 5-8K per check. We
uploaded soft fonts to the AS400 and served the MICR and other fonts with
the PCL. A lot of work, but we avoided buying expensive forms design
software.
