I tried to use the 3590 to do a dsptap on a 3480 tape formatted as 3490, but
got an "Invalid Catridge" message on the 3590 tape unit display and the
message CPF4119 "Device TAP13 cannot process loaded volume" on the AS/400.
If anyone has managed to use the 3590 to read 3490 tapes as
the...@issac.net has, please share with me the procedure/command to do so.
BTW, what added feature does a DUAL 3590 tape drive unit have?
Thanks
The 3590 cartridge, while being the same physical size for automated
library handling, uses metal particle tape that uses pre-recorded servo
tracks to allow writing 128 tracks of data.
The 3480, 3490 and 3490E cartridges contain a chromium dioxide magnetic
particle. The tape in a 3490E cartridge is approximately 1100 feet long
as compared to 540-600 feet in a 3480/3490 cartridge. The 3480 and 3490
cartridges are written on 18 tracks and the 3490E on 36 tracks. All
3490E drives will read 3480 and 3490 cartridges. Some, but not all,
models of the 3490E drive will also write in 3480 format.
Hope this helps.
