I like to share my find with you all.
Downloaded free SBTN3812-SCS2PDF-SPMD at www.b2bedocuments.com
I works great.
Check it out!

I was about to spend lot of money to license software to convert
spool files to PDF and email these out.
After reading this posting, I downloaded free - really free for life -
SCS2PDF-SPMD client at www.B2BeDocuments.com Installed it on PC. I was
able to install and configure within minutes. I started to produce PDF
documents within minutes. Built in emailer is a delight to use.
Again, cann't go wrong with FREE software. I highly recommend it.

but you need a PC to do the conversion. I've found C sourcecode for
TIFF->PDF conversion directly on AS/400 somewhere, I have to dig where
it was, please let me know if you need the info. Creating TIFF files on
the AS/400 can be done with AFP/TIFF G4 driver (works fine).

I cannot imagine AS/400 shop not having a PC connected to AS/400 on a LAN.
AS/400 is text machine. Not a graphics machine.
You do not want AFP PSF/400 to gnenerate PDF.
That is an overkill.
Most shops DO NOT have AFP installed on their AS/400.
You do not want to convert AS/400 text to tiff to pdf.
very convoluted way to generate PDF.
What B2BeDocuments has developed is very elagent way
to convert spool files to PDF and email.
Each system has a place. AS/400 great accounting system.
PCs great for inexpensive advanced implementation.
B2BeDocuments seems to be leading the way in generating
portable documents.

You don't need PSF/400 to print AFP spool files.
We use Host Print Transform to print to Lexmark printers in HP mode (PCL5).
Works great and cheap!!

I forgot to say there are some limitations with HPT, but most of
functionnalities are available i.e. Barcodes, lines, box, fonts...

I agree with most points stated by Lauren, but:

Imho, this is a common mistake. TCO for PC's is a lot higher than TCO for
iSeries (that is, in a business situation where you need to maintain a lot
of PC's). PC's are _not_ inexpensive; they're only cheap to buy.

you have a TIFF G4 printer driver on every AS/400 (see RedBook AS/400
printing V), this is standard. It is easy to create a TIFF G4 file from
spool files in AS/400 IFS. Where is your problem with a simple AS/400
job that converts this TIFF file into a PDF ? I don't need a PC for this
job, so why should I use it? I can't see where I'm "overkilling"
something.
Following *your* logic what an AS/400 should do or not do, an AS/400
should not be allowed to print graphics...
You can print any spool file (including graphics) to tiff. There is no
difference for the AS/400 whether it converts the spool to PCL or
Postscript to send it to a printer or to convert the spool to TIFF G4
format (multipage-tiff), saving the result in a stream file (that can be
loaded directly by a PC). And because your IFS may be connected via QNTC
to any PC/server in your network, you can write the tiff file even
directly to a users PC/server, all with standard AS/400 methods! I find
this quite nice of AS/400.

Most of the time office worker is printing out invoices, statements
on an impact line printer. www.b2bedocuments.com free software
SBTN3812-SCS2PDF-SPMD that I downloaded does spectacular job
of converting os/400 spool files to pdf. As emulates IBM 3812 printer.
I keep using same methods and commands on iSeries that
I have been using for last 15 years.
I don't have learn anything new nor do I have train my office staff
to start producing and emailing pdf reports - immediately.
It is easier to find office worker that knows windows pc.
I cannot imagine going thru gyration that you are describing to generate
pdf reports for distribution.
SBTN3812 rocks. And it is FREE.

I described the technique that is used. What's wrong with a command that
takes a spool file and creates a PDF file, all on the AS/400 ? At the
same time I can specify the EMail adress to send the PDF to or where to
write the PDF. Of course this can be put in a batch for unattended
operation. And it is free too, and I do not need a PC.

If you haven't yet figured it out, at the very least Steve Smith and
Joseph Oluschak are the same person. Read all of their messages and
you'll find their writing styles to be identical. I also believe Lauren
Bigelow is the same person. All three have hotmail accounts.
FWIW, I agree with you. Anytime I can get my AS/400 to do something
without involving a PC I'm happy. It's more robust.
