Display Large Block Characters

I would like to display large block characters on a display. What I have
done is define them in an rpg compile time table like this:
IIIII
I
I
IIIII

Is there a better way? Also, I would like them to display on any
terminal as solid reversed image blocks or blocked out characters, not
the reversed image "I,s" that they are made of. I can do this on some
terminals by substituting a hex character for the "I" but it doesn't
work for all terminals. Does anyone know how to do this.

We need to be able to see information on a display on a plant floor
from a distance and I would certainly appreciate any help anyone can
provide.
