What is the best terminal emulation software to run on PC's in order to
access the AS/400. I am a little disappointed in the functionality of
Client Access Express.

Thanks.

I have a client using BOSaNova TCP/IP because they are on
a model 200 and don't have CA/400. It's quite good. If all
you need is terminal emulation and file transfer, it could be a fit.
It is stable and uses far less resources than CA, also good for
them because some of the PC's are old and slow.

To Tom. Do you know anything about client like BOSaNova, but work with
SDLC protocol? CA is very "heavy" for my computer. and tell me if you
can where can I get it?

You'll love Rumba, very light and works on 95 to XP

For Win95/NT4 get Rumba AS/400 95/NT
on up get their latest

Usually you can get it from System3X

Have fun...

Can you give some examples of what you are missing in CA Express?
I worked with many 5250 emulators, but they all contain rather the same.
Colour and font setting, free keyboard mapping, record/play keys, PC and
host print, some mouse functions like select/copy/paste. What else would
make sense?

I would like to run the printer sessions as a service rather than an
application. That way the printer is online and available even if someone
is not logged into the PC.

You could buy an external printer server device and hook it to the
printer. Then anyone on the network or your AS400 could access the
printer at anytime without it having to be attached to a PC.

That certainly is an option.

I know that RUMBA allows you to run a printer session as a service and then
you do not have to buy the print server hardware. I am not sure that I
should purchase 50 print servers if I can accomplish the same thing with the
emulation software.

So just to clarify, there is no way to run a printer session as a service
with Client Access Express?

Don't know if it's the best, but try Mocha TN5250. Very light and very
stable. Also fairly inexpensive. It's at www.mochasoft.dk. Have your
krones ready.

I never heard of one except for the telnet command in a DOS box.

Use a search engine with telnet+5250 or so and you will get plenty of them.

Look at http://tn5250.sourceforge.net/ for a good emulation

There is no way to do this in Client Access, but there is an
alternative approach ...

1. Set the printer up on your local PC (can be locally attached or
network connected)
2. Share the printer in the Windows normal way.
3. Enable the "Microsoft TCP/IP Printing Service" which creates LPD
queues for all shared printers
4. Create an OS/400 OUTQ with RMTSYS = *INTNETADR and INTNETADR =
<your-PCs-IP> and RMTPRTQ = <name of shared printer>
5. Run the CL command STRRMTWTR <your-OUTQ>

When print jobs are sent to this outq they will forward via LPR/LPD to
your PCs print queue and from there on to the relevant printer.

Joe,

The one caveat to this is that if the PC is using DHCP to get its IP address
then the IP address will eventually change over time.

Well, it *may* change, depending on the lease time and other factors.
But I also prefer static IPs for printers.

Personally, I'd rather have the printer on a JetDirect on the network
than on an NT machine. Then you don't have to worry about what NT might
be doing, although you may have to worry about the JetDirect's limited
lpd implementation.

Check out http://www.emill.net/servicemill.htm

This and many other such applications that allow you to run ANY program as a
service, many available as free open source that require a little extra
work, just go google.

There's lots of stuff out there. Just a few I use and like:

Linoma Software's Surveyor/400 (does lots more than just terminal
emulation, like SQL and DDS generation, File and IDFS editing, file
import/export, spool to PDF conversion, macro support, etc. Java based,
runs on any platform with java support. See www.linomasoftware.com.

Symtrax's Symtrax Telnet. Just a 5250 emulator for Win32. Free. See
www.symtrax.com

Mochasoft's TN5250. Versions available for Windows and Linux. See
www.mochasoft.dk.

My recommendation: Get a cheap old PC (I use a P166 w/64 megs of RAM)
and install a flavor of Linux that you are comfortable with (I recommend
Redhat 7.3, its "friendly" , has great support, and CUPS (Common Unix
Printing System) is installed and supported natively). Set up your
windows, TCP/IP, Jet Direct, etc.. printers on CUPS - it has a super
simple web-based administration frontend! Install the tn5250.xxx.rpm
application and configure it up to hold a printer session and print it
to any printer you have set up in CUPS (local or remote). Set up as many
printer sessions as you please without having a workstation printer
profile opened, SNA server, or expensive alternative devices! You can
get more in depth and have all your sessions run under inetd, so that
you only have to make sure that machine is turned on and will know that
those sessions are being held. I have used this and it is my experience
that this totally outperforms our client session-based printer profiles
(we use CAExpress V5R1M0 + S102975). Good Luck! Support for lp5250d:
