A while back an article was published in News/400 by a fellow from Rick's
College. He outlined a way to install IBM's Rumba/400 without also
installing PC Support or Client Access. The necessary Rumba files can be
copied to a network drive and multiple clients can run "thin" 5250 by
pointing a shortcut to the drive.

Anyway, this solution has worked well for us. However we recently purchased
some new applications that cause problems with the emulation. Rumba gives
inconsistent screen refreshes and unusual Windows errors like "Unable to
create memory lock" and "Unable to send message."

I was wondering if anyone knows of a similar "pseudo thin client" approach
that we could try. Just a simple 5250 application that can run off of a
network drive without a gazillion dlls would probably do the trick. I'm not
really interested in WSG or any of the Java solutions requiring a web
browser. Eventually we will be moving to Terminal Server/Citrix. Maybe the
future lean version of Client Access might even have some potential, but
right now we need a more immediate solution.

Kim:

Point your browser to http://www.lognet-systems.com and download
LogNet 5250 for Windows.

All of our emulators are capable of being installed using a server or client
install. Our Citrix Winframe and Microsoft Terminal Server customers install
to the server and then the thin clients simply create a shortcut pointing to the

server copy of LogNet.

It's very simple, works great and you can even restrict or prevent the thin
client
users from changing settings like keyboard maps, colors, etc.

If you are running TCP/IP try MochaSoft's Telnet client. Very small, very
cheap and comes in Mac flavor, too.
