Nobody wants to use Websphere, Linux, DB2 SQL/PL, Java, HATS, Webfacing, Portal ... or other advanced technology on iSeries. looks AS/400 or iSeries is going to die soon in Canada. how about it in United Status? Why users refuse to used new technology? If you are using AIX, do you still want to used COBOL? if not, why AS400 users are alway thinking about RPG, RPG and RPG? RPG is over. iSeries is over too. IBM should stop to support RPG in new OS/400 and force user to change to Java, whatever on OS/400, AIX or Linux for iSeries. do you agree?

IBM! stop to support RPG please. the old application just let it be, Now, it's the time for revolution! We need a integrated Java application server as same as RPG, DB2 on OS/400.

Nobody wants to use it? Are you kidding?

OK. I don't run Linux on an iSeries. HATS & Webfacing are more like
transition programs. But ....

I found Java is great for screen displays & interactive data entry,
but not so great for back-end processing. I worked for an insurance
company that wanted to change all their COBOL & RPG systems to Java.
Three years later, they have only a test screen, and most apps aren't
converted. Had they put a Java front end and done their rating on the
"old" RPG system - it could have been working in weeks!

Even if you found Java does everything better (I don't agree yet on
that), companies have millions of dollars invested in software, and
can't (or won't) spend millions to get that in Java. Why do you think
so many companies are still using MAPICS, written in 1980's versions
of RPG?

As far as SQL on the iSeries - I use it every day. In fact every user
here uses it every day.

I say, keep on enhancing RPG! and the new stuff too!

The biggest thing I think might kill the iSeries is IBM's lack of
marketing.
My opinion anyway.

IBM is doing a great effort anyway.

After sending several mailings asking to subscribe for the iSeries European
Technical Forum in Barcelona,
one week before the beginning of the forum IBM phones its customers to say
they are not welcome ...

... The forum will be an IBM only event...
Reason (as I was told): to many new announcements would be discussed ... ???

Apparently new stuff that customers are not allowed to use or even know ?

Formerly these forums (in Brussels at that time) also were 'IBM only' .
Our IBM rep told us we could subscribe, and we went there without a problem.
(no 'big secrets' are told anyway, any new announcement would be generally
known the week after it ... ).

Last year this forum was open to customers without any problem (and I think
the year before that also).
This year the forum was explicitly announced to be open and customers were
encouraged to participate.

After I had to convince our management, made plane & hotel reservations for
my colleague and I
(formerly it was in Brussels, so I could participate without any problem,
now it was all but simple to have a go from the mgmt),
I get this unbelievable phone call from IBM (as I told yet, only 7 days
before the forum starts) ...

another major commercial flaw ?
on purpose attempt to stop iSeries selling ?
or just plane paranoia ?

I'm not kidding you. It's ture that almost no company wants to use these new
tech. my department tried to call every AS/400 that we've known in Canada,
to ask them if they are interested in new tech. but all answers are " yes we
are, but we don't have plan to do that."

I can't imagine that IBM is silly enough to purposely stop selling a product
that generates $2.4 Billion in raw sales. Add ancillary sales and it's over
$5 Billion. I'd go with the paranoia theory myself.

Just because it's new doesn't necessarily make it better. People in the U.S.
(Businesses) anyway are capitalists and generally do whatever gives them the
best bang for the buck. The latest technology in spite of excessive bloat or
additional costs are reserved for schools.

Just my opinion. Incidentally, I use iSeries stuff as well as other
technology and a mix of old and new as it makes sense economically.
