I've been handling an AS400 which, until recently, was attached to a Novell
3.12 LAN, which enabled Rumba under Windows 3.1 and CA400 under W95 from
various PCs on it. However, at this time we've relocated the AS400 to a
site that doesn't have a LAN, though we DO have two of the PCs that were
formerly attached via the LAN.
Is it possible to do a straight 3270 / File Transfer session under this,
with a direct connect to the Ethernet connector/transceiver via coax?

It's a bit confusing... the new site doesn't have a LAN... but the AS/400
seems to have an Ethernet card. Am I right ? In case I am, yes you can
connect a PC directly via thin-coax to the AS/400 and use the same
configuration as you used to do. In case the AS/400 Ethernet transceiver
would be UTP, you would need a small hub, or a single crossed-UTP cable.
BTW, AS/400 uses 5250 as screen protocol (not 3270 which is for
mainframes).
Kind regards,
Paul

Thanks for your response. Sorry about the confusion.
In the location where all this stuff USED to be, there's the AS/400, with
the following attachments:
* Terminals attached via twinax...
* The hub to thin coax to the Novell server.
* A 3Com thin coax transceiver (through which ran "ETHLINE"), on the
AS/400...
* the PC-in-question running Rumba or CA/400 attached via the LAN.
In the present location we have (avoiding sounding like WCW):
* the AS/400 (w/transceiver of course)...
* the terminals up and attached via twinax...
* a Blank Model 95, formerly Novell server (that is, wiped)...
* lots of intact thin coax...
* the PC-in-question waiting to be attached somewhere.
Is there a way to do this without a hub and server? Else I've no problem
searching for the old software/hardware, it'd just take that much more time,
which, of course, is someone's money.
Thanks again,
i'm not sure i totally understand either, but here goes:
if you want to attach the p/c to the as/400 using ethernet, you will need to get a hub.
you do not need a 'network server'. the p/c can attach directly to the hub.
if you do not want to get a hub, you will need to get a twinax card for your p/c.
