SAVSYS taking forever

Hiya,

Terribly green AS/400 administrator here.

I have an AS/400 running MAPICS XA v4 - it has been installed for about two
months and we've never done a SAVSYS.

I come from RS/6000 and I could not live without SYSBACK, where I run a new
tape on my DDS3 every night.

So tonight I do my first SAVSYS on the AS/400. I'm thinking it will take no
longer than an hour. After all, the MAPICS internal "backup" only takes
about 10 minutes to copy a disk image to tape.

The tape drive is a magstar MP 3570 and is TAP01, and it is fast.

But it has already been a half hour and I'm only at "library 10 of 116". The
counter on the 3570 is counting something - it is up to "32" now, but it
hasn't changed to the next tape.

Here is what I did: From the Main Menu, I chose menu items 3, 6, 21. I
accepted all defaults, just pressing Enter at every screen. I had to reply
to one message - something about a subsystem in use. I replied with "i" for
ignore. The tape drive pulled the first tape in and went to work.

Two concerns:

1) Did I somehow select by default to have the data compressed to tape and
that is why it is taking so long?

2) If I go home now will the system automatically go back up and let TCP/IP
Client Access clients access the system again?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Unfortunately I am so green
I do not even know what level operating system I am at, but I know it is a

Bob, I think you had a message in qsysopr qeue that you did not answer, may
be a subsystem is not down.. if you do a save of the whole system you should
first end all subsystems by doing endsbs *all *immed, then check messages for
restricted state of as/400 ( normally 21 on save screen does that, just in
case you press enter and walk away you should do that manually and check) on
the save screen you should enter tapxx the next 2 values to N and msg
delivery to *notify... everything should work automatic...i do this on every
friday with a scheduled date and with a 3570 you should save about 10 gb data
from a 620 with smallest proc in about 50 minutes

As somelse has posted, you most likely have a message waiting in the
*SYSOPR queue.

No you need to look at the parameters so you understand what is required,
for example the default of 'Yes' for check for active files checks the
whole tape for unexpired files, and takes alot of time too. I normally
have this set to 'No'. Also, if the tap has never been used you will get
an error message if I remember correctly. If you look in the manuals,
you find out what you need to know to get the save to work the way you
want.

If the start-up program has been modified to start TCP/IP
