We are looking to use XML for the data. I'm wondering if anyone has
used the IBM XML Toolkit for the AS400.
The customer will need to purchase the product, so we'd need to
build a business case. If anyone can provide a rough estimate of what
it would cost, whether it's a one-time charge or annual license, etc,
it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any war stories of words of praise about the product itself
would be great: strentghs and weaknesses, ease of use, any
co-requisite products.
I've read a few other posts that seem to indicate that the parser
is based on C++. Do we need the C++ compiler? I'm not sure the
customer has the C++ compiler installed on the AS400.
I'm almost certain there is no C++ expertise in-house, so once the
project is done, they may be in the dark for future changes to the
system.
Are there any similar products from other vendors?
Thanks for any help?

we offer an solution for XML creating/parsing which is complete
iSeries based.
Usage is as simple and intuitive as Query/400. Price is quite same as
a few days for an external consultant.
Have a look at www.goering.de for the iSeries Tool "i4XML".

I've used the version of this that used to be available from the
AlphaWorks site and not had any problems with it. The project I did
was in RPG but it does support COBOL and there are COBOL examples
available. You'll end up making lots of API calls but once you get an
understanding of what it's doing, it isn't that difficult to use.
You will not need the C++ compiler but as long as the customers are on
fairly recent releases of OS/400 and have purchased any of the
compilers, they have a license for that compiler anyway.
As far as pricing goes, I don't think it's that expensive (it may not
even have a charge on V5R2) but I'd check with your business partner
(or IBM itself).

I've used the Apache XML parser with other languages, so I don't
think I'll have any problems.
We checked the price, and it's so low the customer didn't hesitate
to place the order.
