Is it possible to leave an AS/400 off and turn it on remotely? I am
getting a used AS/400 620. I want to cut cost. It will only be used
part-time and I don't want to pay for any unnessessary uptime(e.g.
24x7). I can do this to a PC, but I don't think it's possible with an
AS/400
Thanks,
Brian

PS - The AS/400 has an fsiop card in it that may respond to a wol
packet - don't know if this helps?

there is the QIPLDATTIM system value. It might do what it implies,
which is power up the system at a set date and time.

He wajnts to start it from home when he needs it I suppose. By that time
QIPLDATTIM is not very helpful.

The FSIOP card won't help - it won't be active until well into the normal
IPL procedure.

It is possible to have an AS/400 IPL whenever power becomes available (like
after a power outage) - but I don't know of any way of waking one up on
demand...

Thanks for the help, guys. This newsgroup is the fastest way to get
answers.

another question, anyone know what the cost to run it 24x7(I know
electric prices vary) is? I'm a little nervous, because I believe the
620 runs on 220 and when I think of 220v I picture a lot of $$$.
I might just have the system on during the weekend and only on in the
after hours during the week.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

It can be done by making a telephone call to the AS/400 modem. It's
controlled by the QRMTIPL system value. See:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm?info/rzakz/rzakzqrmtipl.htm

(I've never done this, so I don't know how to set it up.)

if power consumption is an issue wouldn't it make more sense to get a
150 or 170??

The telephone trick to the support modem has worked since V1R0M0, and
is what I would reccommend also. You don't even have to use another
modem. You can call the ECS modem from any phone, and, with the propper
system value set, the AS/400 will start an IPL.

I was given the 620 by a company I contract for. Really don't have the
money to buy even an entry box. Never understood why IBM never gave
away development boxes(with software) to developers - would be a huge
boost for as/400 world let alone IBM.
thanks for the help.

Actually, with the 150 they sort of did. You could get a package deal
including the box and PDM (with CL and RPG) in VR7 for a decent price.
Mind you, with hard- and software maintenance that price went up
steeply... And, as it turned out, the 'growth' model could not really
grow...
