I am AS400 adminstrator. Our system failed two times in half year. If any
one know some command like "Chkdsk" which can detect hard disk failure.
Any software which can detect hardware deterioration?

The AS/400 is loaded with diagnostic and logging facilities. If it's
possible to know that a drive is going bad the AS/400 will notice it and
will record the information SOMEWHERE. I would expect at the very least
that messages are sent to QSYSOPR and QHIST, but I suspect there are
other facilities as well. Hopefully someone out there can fill in some
details. (Since I don't have to "administer" a system, and since I'm
always dealing with pre-release systems that are buggy to begin with, I
don't generally pay attention to this sort of stuff.)

If the AS/400 detects any errors on the disk drives, then an entry will be made
in the system error log (accessed through the STRSST menu). If an excessive
number of soft (correctable) errors are detected, then a message will be sent
operator queue.

In the event of a hard catastrophic failure in the system ASP then the system will
stop - unless you are using some form of RAID or mirroring protection....

In 20 odd system years (4 system * 5 years) I have only had one case of such a
failure (granted these are fairly small systems!)

Check your error logs periodically, and if you start getting a lot of errors on
a drive, then get your service provider to replace it.

Make sure that your backups are current, and if you can afford it, go with
some form of protection.

In my case, I have never had any lost data due to a hardware problem...

All serious DASD-errors is always logged in QSYSOPR but if you want to see
more you have to use the STRSST command and select opt. 1 Start a service tool
then go for the errorlog-utility. DASD-errors is logged in the "magnetic
media"-section.

In Sweden IBM let you use a program called Service Director (if you have the
right maintenance agreement) that will monitor your errorlog and if it find a
serious problem it automatically sendsit to IBM ServiCE.

One Sites here in Switzerland, IBM installs a program called SERVICE
DIRECTOR. It monitors the system and sends an alert to IBM Technical
support via ECS line. Then IBM calls you to discuss what to do.

I had the situation that a disk had some faults, and they came to
remove it without the nedd to call them. The system did it.

Nice, isn't it?

Have a nice weekend

You may want to look into the command PRTERRLOG and use this command at
some frequency to keep track of errors the system is reporting.

Get to your IBMer and have them install service director.. It is avaialble
in the states as well and is a great tool..
In the mean time.. use STRSST 1,1,3 mag medis to also get this info until
then..

Service directory is free and basically does the above and communicate the
info to IBM assuming you have an ECS.
