Hi, I was hoping someone would give me a definitive answer on how the SMTP
configuration on the AS400 actually works. I'm trying to set up our AS400 so
that so that I can send messages from programs (backup CLPs for example) to
my Exchange mailbox. I'll only be using SNDDST, may even experiment with
mail APIs later on. I set up the configuration according to various sources
on the net and it seems to work OK. However, I've been trying to play with
the e-mail address that the AS400 creates as reply address but it doesn't
appear to be logical.

The first time I got an address something like FREDL?S11...@HOST.MYDOMAIN
which I now understand is because the SMTP was not defined (?). Then I
experimented with the SMTP address (WRKNAMSMTP), changing to various
fictitious addresses. Sometimes it sends the mail as the address I put in
and other times it sends it as something completely different.
So what are the rules...?

How do I set up the a user ID in the system directory so that they can
SNDDST and maybe later receive replies on the AS400 but yet have a reply
address that looks like an internet address of my choosing..? Also what
relation has the QSNADS subsystem got with all this..? Do I need that
running for this to work correctly or can I turn it off - ours is a
completely TCP/IP network.

TIA...

I'm going through the same problems. We will be replacing our CISC
V3R2 with the new I Series but I need to get Email running now.

I remember setting up the local domain name by using CFGTCP menu. The
problem I have now is that I can send emails internally but cannot
resolve to external Email addresses. Sounds like you are having the
same problem.

Have a look at http://www.way.org.uk and see if that helps. To change
the address of the sender, go into the directory entry (WRKDIRE) for
that user, and hit F19 and create an SMTP alias of the fr...@mycorp.com
variety.

Hope this helps

A quick & easy outbound email setup can be found here. They also have a
CL program that uses SNDDST to email spool files. I found this when I
was first playing around with email.

Thanks guys, but the two websites recommended, the one below and
http://www.way.org.uk were the ones I used to get my configuration going in
the first place. Both are very good sites and the instructions do work but
my original question probably wasn't too clear - what I need to know is the
relationship between the WRKNAMSMTP entry, the WRKDIRE entry and the
CHGTCPDMN entry. So when I run the SNDDST signed on as JACKA for example,
what does OS400 do to form the message and assign a reply address ??

I've tried altering each entry (from the above), one at a time then doing a
SNDDST and sometimes the reply address changes but not to one that I would
expect. I'm not at the AS400 right now so I can't cite any examples. Also, I
cannot send an e-mail to an external address, only those on the internal
e-mail server - but that's my next problem.

Jack,

I did not need to use WRKNAMSMTP in setting up outbound email. In
CHGTCPDMN for Host and Domain, I entered what our network group allowed
me to use (we're an NT [groan] shop) and I entered the IP addresses for
the primary and secondary Domain Name Servers. In WRKDIRE, select your
ID with option 2, then pressed F19 (Change name for SMTP). Enter you
internet address (SMTP user ID = left of the "@" sign , SMTP domain =
right of the "@" sign). "@" sign is not used. I did not need to enter
the ROUTE. You should then be able to send internet email with SNDDST.
For me, I then did something a little different. I changed the SMTP user
ID to my Lotus Notes name, and I changed the SMTP domain to our SMTP
server's name. This lets me bounce email from the AS/400 (without going
through the internet firewall) back into out NT network for internal
email, and it passes mail through the firewall for outside email. The
Reply-to will be my internet email ID for internet email and my Lotus
Notes ID for internal email. For AS/400 userids that I don't want
replies to (like QSYSOPR), then I create an invalid internet address in
WRKDIRE - something like QSYSOPR(do_not_reply)@us.agfa.com .

Yes, seems to work Dave, but only for internal e-mails. I'm using our
Exchange server as the mail router in the SMTPA config. Is this an issue
with exchange configuration (ie. do I need to get it to do some sort of
e-mail forwarding) or should I be identifying my 400 as an e-mail server to
my ISP's DNS config ?

If your AS400 can send emails (SNDDST) to your internal mail server.
It should also be able to send emails (SNDDST) to your isp's mailbox.

If this is your question. From an AS400 command line can you ping our
ISP's mail server. If not, you to need add a routing entry.

Ping the IP address not the name of your ISP's mail server.

CFGTCP option 2

Change TCP/IP Route (CHGTCPRTE)

Route destination . . . . . . . > *DFTROUTE
Subnet mask . . . . . . . . . . > *NONE
Type of service . . . . . . . . > *NORMAL
Next hop . . . . . . . . . . . . > x.x.x.x <-- Your as400 ip

If you can now ping your ISP mail server, you should be send emails to
your ISP's mail server.

CHGSMTPA RTYDAY(0 0)
RTYHOUR(0 0)
MAILROUTER('x.x.x.x') <- IP address of you ISP mail server.
FIREWALL(*YES)

This is all I had to do to get our emails working.
